Kaizer Chiefs fans had something to cheer about on Wednesday evening when new signing Khanyisa Mayo marked his debut with a goal.
The young forward showed exactly why the club brought him in, finding the net in the 39th minute to give Amakhosi the lead.
But while Mayo made headlines with his first strike, it wasn’t enough to secure all three points.
Chiefs were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw at home against Marumo Gallants, leaving many supporters both excited about Mayo’s potential and frustrated with the final result.
Chiefs Struggle to Build Momentum
Heading into the clash, Amakhosi had suffered back-to-back defeats and were desperate to get back to winning ways.
Mayo’s goal looked like the perfect spark, but the team couldn’t hold on.
In the second half, Gallants equalised through Jaisen Clifford, crushing Chiefs’ hopes of ending their mini-slump with a much-needed victory.
The result means Chiefs remain in third place on the log, six points behind Sekhukhune United — though they still have a game in hand.
Junior Khanye Weighs In
Former Kaizer Chiefs winger Junior Khanye didn’t hold back when sharing his thoughts on the match.
While he praised Mayo’s bright debut, he placed the blame for the draw squarely on the coaching staff.
“I think this is a game the coach has to take the blame, I’m talking about the assistant and technical team. They made the wrong substitutions.
You can’t take out Mayo and Gaston Sirino; those two complemented each other,” Khanye said on iDiski TV.
A Player With Legacy and Drive
For Khanye, Mayo’s performance wasn’t just about ability — it was also about heart.
He suggested that Mayo’s motivation to succeed is deeply tied to his family legacy, particularly his father’s history in the game.
“You could see that he gave it all. Chiefs needed a player like him up front — a striker who understands football.
The boy is talented,” Khanye added.
Looking Ahead
Mayo only joined Chiefs a few weeks ago and is currently on loan from CR Belouizdad.
Even so, his debut showed that he could become a key figure in Amakhosi’s push for silverware this season.
The big question now is simple: how many goals will Mayo score this season?
