For Khanyisa Mayo, pulling on the famous gold and black of Kaizer Chiefs is more than just another career step—it’s the fulfilment of a lifelong dream.
The 27-year-old striker has officially joined Amakhosi on loan from Algerian side CR Belouizdad, and he’s ready to make his mark in Soweto.
A Return to South Africa After a Tough Spell Abroad
Mayo left Cape Town City for North Africa last year, but things didn’t quite go to plan.
In 27 appearances for CR Belouizdad, he only managed four goals—far from the form that made him one of South Africa’s most exciting forwards.
Interestingly, Chiefs had shown interest in him before he made that move to Algeria.
Back then, the Soweto giants lost out to Belouizdad. Now, they’ve finally got their man.
A Family Connection to the Club
For Mayo, joining Kaizer Chiefs is deeply personal.
His father, Patrick Mayo, is a club legend, and the striker is determined to follow in those footsteps.
“It’s a dream come true. The only team I would come back for is Kaizer Chiefs,” he said in his first interview with the club.
“The club has a great history, and my father is part of that history. Chiefs is the biggest team in the country, in Africa, and to me, the world.”
Set to Wear the Number 3 Jersey
While strikers traditionally take higher numbers, Mayo will wear the number 3 shirt for Chiefs—a decision confirmed by the club over the weekend.
Fans will no doubt be eager to see him step onto the pitch in that jersey for his long-awaited debut.
Strengthening the Attack
Mayo isn’t the only new face in attack. Chiefs have also signed Flavio Silva and Etiosa Ighodaro as they look to sharpen their frontline and compete at the highest level this season.
What’s Next for Mayo?
The big question now is whether Mayo will start in his debut match.
Supporters are already debating if his presence could give Chiefs the cutting edge they’ve been missing in front of goal.
One thing’s for sure—the anticipation around his first game is high, and with his passion for the badge, fans will be expecting him to deliver.
