Kevin De Bruyne Faces Early Substitution During Emotional Return to Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium

Manchester City fans were eager to welcome back one of their all-time greats, Kevin De Bruyne, as he returned to the Etihad for the first time since his move to Serie A this summer.

After Pep Guardiola chose not to renew his contract, the Belgian midfielder joined Antonio Conte’s Napoli, and the anticipation around his homecoming was immense.

De Bruyne lined up alongside Manchester United loanee Rasmus Hojlund and former Red Devil Scott McTominay, receiving a heartfelt reception from City supporters.

Fans filled the stands with banners reading “King Kev” and “Once a blue, always a blue,” celebrating the midfielder’s decade of achievements, which included 16 trophies, six Premier League titles, and a Champions League crown.

The club is even planning a statue in his honor.

Short-Lived Homecoming

Despite the fanfare, De Bruyne’s return to the Etihad was cut short, lasting just 26 minutes.

The turning point came when Napoli captain Giovanni Di Lorenzo was shown a straight red card for a foul on Manchester City striker Erling Haaland.

The Norwegian had been through on goal when Di Lorenzo brought him down just outside the box, prompting VAR review and the sending-off.

Shortly after the red card, Napoli manager Simone Inzaghi opted to replace De Bruyne with defender Mathias Olivera, leaving the Belgian visibly disappointed as he walked to the bench.

Fans Express Frustration on Social Media

Supporters were quick to vent their frustration online, with many criticizing the timing of De Bruyne’s substitution.

One fan wrote, “Napoli are a man down against Manchester City and took off two men, Kevin De Bruyne.”

Another added, “Di Lorenzo, you ruined his return FFS,” reflecting the collective disappointment among City fans.

De Bruyne’s Strong Start in Serie A

Despite the setback, De Bruyne has enjoyed a positive start to his Napoli career.

He has appeared in all three games so far this season, scoring twice, including a goal on his debut against Sassuolo.

Napoli sit atop the Serie A table, showcasing the team’s strong early form even as they navigate challenging matches against top opponents.
