Following the assassination of a police officer during a bandit attack at their camp in Mlima Jangili, security in Laikipia has been tightened up.
“Another cop was injured in the leg after being shot by an unknown number of shooters thought to be herders who had stolen cattle,” police spokesperson Bruno Shioso said.
He claimed that three other cops in the camp fled for their lives when they were attacked by the gunman.
Shioso added, “They were stationed at Mlima Jangili Operation Camp, which was attacked.”
The officers were among those stationed in the area to apprehend armed herders attempting to take over private farms.
The military is among government agencies in the operation there.
The government has been ordering the herders in the private ranches to leave but some have defied the orders.
An operation was mounted in the area last September following repeated attacks on residents and security agencies by gunmen believed to be herders.
More than 20 security personnel have been killed in the seven months standoff.
