In the ever-turbulent world of South African politics, another wave of controversy is crashing over the City of Johannesburg.

This time, it’s Kenny Kunene—well-known businessman-turned-politician—who’s under the spotlight, and not for reasons he’d want.

Kunene, who serves as the city’s MMC for Transport and also holds the title of deputy president of the Patriotic Alliance (PA), is facing mounting pressure to resign after being linked to a high-profile murder case.

Found at Home of Murder Suspect

It all started when news broke that Kunene was present at the home of Katiso ‘KT’ Molefe when police arrived to arrest Molefe in connection with the 2022 killing of popular musician Oupa John Sefoka, better known as DJ Sumbody.

While Kunene hasn’t been charged with any crime, just being found at the scene during such a sensitive arrest has sparked public outcry and fierce political debate.

Party Puts Kunene on Leave as Pressure Builds

Following the backlash, PA leader Gayton McKenzie announced that Kunene would be taking a 30-day leave of absence from his political duties while investigations continue.

McKenzie made the move public shortly after Kunene’s name became entangled in the DJ Sumbody murder probe.

DA Slams Patriotic Alliance Over ‘Underworld Links’

The Democratic Alliance (DA) didn’t waste any time in responding.

In a sharply worded statement, the party accused the Patriotic Alliance of harboring shady underworld connections and demanded that Kunene be removed from his position altogether.

“The people of Johannesburg don’t deserve to be governed by officials who are close to murder suspects,” the DA said, adding that the PA is “a selfish, underworld organisation” entrenched in corruption and criminality.

McKenzie Defends His Ally Amid the Drama

Despite growing criticism online and in the media, Gayton McKenzie is standing by his longtime political ally.

In a Facebook livestream, McKenzie said he fully trusts Kunene, stating that his presence at Molefe’s home was simply to accompany a journalist for an interview.

He also admitted that while he believes Kunene is innocent, it’s only fair that investigations continue without interference, hence the temporary leave.

Four Accused Appear in Court for DJ Sumbody’s Murder

Meanwhile, the murder case itself is progressing. On Tuesday, 22 July, four men accused of being involved in DJ Sumbody’s killing appeared in the Alexandra Magistrate’s Court.

They’re facing charges of murder and conspiracy to commit murder.

The matter has been postponed until Tuesday, 29 July, as legal proceedings continue.

What Do You Think—Should Kunene Resign?

As the political fallout grows and the public demands accountability, the big question remains: Should Kenny Kunene step down from his role as MMC?
