Keir Starmer is under growing pressure as calls increase for him to take action against Treasury Minister Tulip Siddiq, who is facing scrutiny over her property dealings and connections to controversial figures.
Amid an investigation into her links to her aunt, the former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s regime, Siddiq has been accused of using properties in London that may be connected to corrupt practices.
Allegations Over Properties and Links to Bangladeshi Regime
Tulip Siddiq, the Labour MP for Hampstead and Highgate, is currently under investigation by a watchdog regarding her use of homes tied to her aunt, Sheikh Hasina, who is at the center of an anti-corruption probe in Bangladesh.
Reports claim Siddiq used a flat in Hampstead that was given to her sister by an associate of the Awami League party, which Sheikh Hasina leads.
Another property in King’s Cross was reportedly gifted to Siddiq by another ally of the party.
These revelations have sparked calls for her resignation, with critics accusing her of using properties obtained through dubious means.
Further complicating the matter, Bangladesh’s interim government, led by Muhammad Yunus, has also weighed in, urging that these properties be returned if acquired through corrupt means and calling for an apology from Siddiq.
The Political Fallout and Growing Demands for Action
As economic secretary to the Treasury, Siddiq holds a critical role in shaping policy related to corruption and financial integrity.
However, the mounting allegations have prompted calls for her to step down from her post.
Shadow Chancellor Mel Stride voiced concerns over her ability to perform her duties effectively given the serious accusations now surrounding her.
Tory leaders, including Kemi Badenoch, have also intensified pressure on Keir Starmer to remove Siddiq from her position, accusing him of weak leadership.
Badenoch highlighted the contradiction of appointing someone with such serious corruption allegations as the anti-corruption minister, urging Starmer to take swift action.
Government’s Response and Investigation
Despite the growing criticism, government officials have emphasized that the investigation into Siddiq’s activities should proceed without political interference.
Science Secretary Peter Kyle defended Siddiq’s decision to refer herself for an independent investigation and assured the public that the process would be allowed to unfold without bias.
Siddiq herself has maintained that she has done nothing wrong and has requested an independent inquiry to clear her name.
She responded to recent media reports, asserting that much of the information surrounding her financial dealings and family’s links to the Bangladeshi government was inaccurate.
While Siddiq’s role in a 2013 nuclear deal between Russia and Bangladesh has been flagged in the investigation, she has denied any involvement in the alleged embezzlement.
Despite the ongoing inquiry, sources close to Siddiq continue to describe the allegations as unfounded.
Next Steps and Continued Pressure
As the inquiry progresses, Siddiq’s future remains uncertain.
The Labour leader, Sir Keir Starmer, faces a delicate situation, with pressure mounting from all sides to address the issue swiftly.
Whether Siddiq will be cleared of the accusations or face further consequences remains to be seen, but for now, her political career appears to hang in the balance.
