The iconic legal drama Matlock is making a major comeback, but with a modern twist.
This time, the beloved role is being taken on by Emmy and Academy Award-winner Kathy Bates, who plays the brilliant lawyer Madeline “Matty” Matlock.
The gender-flipped reboot will air on M-Net (DStv Channel 101) starting 27 January at 8 PM.
A New Take on an Old Favorite
The original Matlock series, which ran from 1986 to 1995, starred Andy Griffith as the sharp-witted attorney.
However, the new version of the show brings a fresh perspective to the character and the storyline.
In this updated rendition, Matty Matlock, a savvy septuagenarian lawyer, returns to the workforce at a prestigious law firm.
Her motivation? Seeking justice for the death of her daughter Ellie in the opioid epidemic.
This twist on the original series includes a personal connection, as Ellie’s love of the classic Matlock show inspired her mother’s alter ego.
A High-Stakes Legal Drama
The series will follow Matty as she works alongside senior attorney Olympia, played by Skye P. Marshall, who has a deep passion for justice.
Meanwhile, Olympia’s ex-husband, Julian (played by Jason Ritter), is intrigued by Matty’s unorthodox methods of exposing corruption and winning cases.
The drama intensifies as Matty partners with younger associates, including the charismatic Billy (David del Rio) and the driven Sarah (Leah Lewis), while navigating the high-pressure environment of the law firm.
What’s Coming Next for Matlock
Fans can look forward to more action as a second season of Matlock is already in the works.
Developed by Jane the Virgin creator Jennie Snyder, the new series retains the essence of the original, with contributions from Dean Hargrove, the creator of the original show.
Kathy Bates also serves as an executive producer, adding her signature touch to the project.
More Exciting Shows to Look Out For
Alongside Matlock, Showmax is bringing back The Mommy Club for its third season, introducing new faces and fresh storylines.
There’s a lot of exciting TV coming your way in the next few months!
