Big moments in life often feel even more meaningful when shared with the people closest to us, and that’s exactly the energy Kate Winslet carried as she stepped onto the red carpet with her rarely seen son, Joe Anders.
The pair made an elegant appearance at the world premiere of their joint project, Goodbye June, held at The Curzon Mayfair in London on Wednesday.
A New Chapter Behind the Camera
For the first time in her career, Kate, now 50, took on the role of director for the emotional family drama—while also starring in it.
What made the experience even more personal was the fact that the screenplay was written by her 21-year-old son, Joe.
The moment was clearly a proud one for the actress, who spoke warmly about seeing her son’s work come to life.
Stylish Moments on the Red Carpet
The premiere came with plenty of glamour.
Kate arrived in a sleek black gown featuring a scooped neckline and a waist-cinching belt, commanding attention with ease.
Joe, whose father is filmmaker Sam Mendes, kept things classic in a sharp tuxedo paired with a crisp white shirt.
Although Kate and Sam divorced in 2010 after seven years of marriage, Joe has since professionally adopted the surname Anders.
The Ensemble Cast Brings More Star Power
The event was also attended by the film’s standout cast members, including Andrea Riseborough, Toni Collette, and Timothy Spall.
Toni, 53, stepped out in a stunning high-neck floral gown with tiered details and a flowing cape effect.
Andrea, 44, chose a soft chiffon dress accented with gold sequins, completing her look with timeless stilettos.
A Drama Rooted in Family Turmoil
Set to stream on Netflix, Goodbye June explores the lives of siblings who are forced to reconnect under sudden emotional strain.
The project blends personal tension, unexpected reunions, and contemporary family dynamics.
Working With Her Son: Kate Shares the Experience
During an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live, Kate opened up about the creative journey she shared with Joe.
She explained that although she originally planned to produce and act in the film, she couldn’t bring herself to hand the story over to another director.
According to her, letting someone else take charge would make the story theirs—and she didn’t want Joe to lose the sense of ownership over his work.
She described having him on set every day as “fantastic,” praising his natural understanding of filmmaking.
A Push Toward Directing
Kate has long heard whispers encouraging her toward directing.
On Elizabeth Day’s How To Fail podcast, she admitted that people in the industry frequently asked why she wasn’t behind the camera already.
Her hesitation, she said, stemmed from the enormous commitment required and her responsibilities as a young mother—having welcomed her daughter Mia at just 25.
Now, however, she feels a growing responsibility to contribute to changing the culture of a male-dominated industry, admitting that not directing sooner sometimes feels like she’s letting other women down.
A Family of Performers
Kate’s children seem to be following her path.
Joe appeared with her in Lee and previously acted in the Oscar-nominated war drama 1917, directed by his father, Sam Mendes.
Her daughter, 24-year-old Mia Threapleton—whose father is actor Jim Threapleton—has also been building her own career, earning praise for her role alongside Kate in the Bafta-winning drama I Am Ruth.
Kate’s youngest, 11-year-old Bear, whom she shares with her third husband, Edward Abel Smith (Sir Richard Branson’s nephew), completes her talented household.
