With the transfer window heating up and Kaizer Chiefs deep into their rebuilding phase, a familiar name has surfaced in connection with the club—Lebogang Phiri.
The former Bafana Bafana midfielder has made it clear he’s open to joining Amakhosi, and it seems the feeling might be mutual.
Phiri Confirms Chiefs Have Reached Out
In a recent interview, Phiri spoke candidly about his current status and a potential move to Naturena.
He revealed that Kaizer Chiefs had already initiated contact with him and his representatives.
“Yes, Kaizer Chiefs did contact me and my representatives,” Phiri told Sunday World.
“We had some early discussions, but I think things went quiet a bit because they had to focus on their pre-season tour in the Netherlands.”
Still Hopeful for a Deal
Even though talks have temporarily stalled, Phiri isn’t closing the door.
In fact, he remains optimistic that the conversation will pick up again soon.
“But hopefully in the upcoming days or weeks, our talks will resume, and we will come up with something,” he added.
With his transfer value sitting at around R3 million, according to Transfermarkt, the 29-year-old could be a relatively affordable and experienced addition to the Chiefs’ midfield.
Amakhosi Preparing for More Signings
It’s not just Phiri on the radar. Chiefs are clearly not done in the market.
Club marketing director Jessica Motaung confirmed that more player announcements are on the horizon.
“We’re taking a very professional approach when it comes to bringing new players into the team,” Motaung told the media.
“Announcements will be made when the time is right. But yes, we’re working on it.”
She also hinted that some players they’re interested in are still under contract elsewhere, which means patience is key for both the club and fans.
Chiefs Close In on Their Seventh Signing
As part of their ongoing squad revamp, Chiefs are now approaching what could be their seventh new signing in this transfer window.
It’s part of a wider effort to inject new life and depth into the squad—especially in key positions that were exposed last season.
Reports suggest midfield and defence remain top priorities, which could work in Phiri’s favour given his versatility and experience both locally and internationally.
Should Chiefs Go All In on Phiri?
It’s a move that could make sense for both parties.
Phiri brings solid experience, leadership, and calm on the ball—traits that Chiefs could definitely use in their midfield setup.
But as always in football, it’s about timing, fit, and negotiations behind the scenes.
What do you think? Should Amakhosi make it happen?
