Kaizer Chiefs contact Khanyisa Mayo’s father in Soweto as they reignite efforts to sign the CR Belouizdad forward

Even after missing out on Khanyisa Mayo last year, Kaizer Chiefs haven’t given up.

The club is reportedly back in the chase for the talented forward—and this time, they’re going straight to the source. Or rather, his father.

In 2023, Mayo made headlines when he signed with Algerian side CR Belouizdad—just an hour before the Chiefs reached out to his camp.

It was a near miss that left Amakhosi fans disappointed, especially given how much the team was (and still is) in need of seasoned firepower up front.

Father-Son Football Legacy Could Be in the Making

In a recent interview, Khanyisa Mayo’s father, Patrick Mayo—a respected former footballer himself—confirmed that the Chiefs reached out again last week.

But this time, they weren’t just speaking to the agent. They wanted dad’s blessing.

“Yes, Kaizer Chiefs called me last week,” Patrick told Kick Off.

“They wanted to know if I would give Khanyisa my blessing to join the club.”

While Patrick made it clear that the final decision rests with his son, he admitted it would be a dream come true.

“I told them I’d be proud to see him at Chiefs,” he said. “It would be historic.

He’d be following in my footsteps, and that would mean everything to me.”

Mayo’s Recent Form Shows Why Chiefs Are Still Interested

Mayo, who has played for Richards Bay FC and Cape Town City, continues to make waves on the continent.

His move to CR Belouizdad might have taken him off the local radar, but it hasn’t diminished his value.

His CAF Champions League appearances—even when challenged by heavyweights like Orlando Pirates’ Makhehleni Makhaula—have only made him a more attractive target for South African clubs.

Kaizer Chiefs Training Gets a Tunisian Boost in Europe

While transfer talks continue, the Kaizer Chiefs squad is putting in serious work overseas.

The team recently added a new face to their training staff in the Netherlands—stepping up their physical preparations for the upcoming season.

Since their usual conditioning coach, Majdi Safi, stayed behind at Naturena, head coach Nasreddine Nabi brought in a specialist, Zghal, to lead strength and fitness sessions in Europe.

It’s all part of the club’s effort to enter the new season stronger and more disciplined—on and off the field.

What’s Next for Mayo and the Chiefs?

Will Khanyisa Mayo choose to write a new chapter in the family’s Kaizer Chiefs legacy? The club is ready.

The fans are hopeful. And his father has already given the green light. Now, the ball is in Khanyisa’s court.
