Kaizer Chiefs supporters have a reason to celebrate this week as the club has finally secured a long-term target in their ongoing transfer spree.
The team has made its eighth signing of the window, adding more firepower to their attacking options.
Chiefs Confirm Signing of Etiosa Ighodaro
On Tuesday morning, Chiefs officially announced the acquisition of striker Etiosa Ighodaro, who joins from Mamelodi Sundowns as a free agent.
This move marks a significant boost for the Naturena side as they continue to strengthen their squad for the season ahead.
A Tough Battle for Ighodaro
Securing Ighodaro wasn’t straightforward. Reports from FARPost reveal that Sundowns were determined not to let the striker move to Chiefs without a fight.
“When Sundowns learned that Ighodaro was set to join Chiefs, they quickly offered him a new contract,” the report explained.
Sundowns promised that this season would finally give him opportunities alongside stars like Peter Shalulile, especially with Lucas Ribeiro Costa likely to leave.
However, Ighodaro turned down both the new offer and a potential move to Tunisian giants Esperance, showing his clear interest in the Chiefs move.
Sundowns Try to Block the Transfer
Sundowns initially tried to block the transfer, fearing the striker would strengthen a rival team.
But after legal advice suggested they might lose the case, the club eventually issued the necessary clearance on Monday, allowing Ighodaro to finalize his move.
As a result, he joins Chiefs without any transfer fee involved.
Strengthening Chiefs’ Attack
Ighodaro becomes the eighth signing for Kaizer Chiefs this transfer window and their second striker addition.
He is expected to compete for starting positions with fellow newcomers Flavio Silva, Tashreeq Morris, Wandile Duba, and Naledi Hlongwane.
The striker comes with a solid record, scoring 25 goals in 97 top-flight appearances in South Africa.
