Kaizer Chiefs begin new Betway Premiership campaign in Cape Town without suspended winger Pule Mmodi

As the new Betway Premiership season kicks off, Kaizer Chiefs are preparing for a tricky opening fixture — and they’ll be doing it without one of their most influential players.

Their first match will be away at Athlone Stadium against a confident Stellenbosch FC side, and the Soweto giants are facing an early setback before a ball is even kicked.

No MTN8 Action, Now a Tough Opening

Unlike some of their rivals, Amakhosi had last weekend off due to their failure to crack the top 8 last season, which meant they missed out on the MTN8 competition.

That extra time off might have helped with preparations, but it won’t change the fact that one of their most exciting players won’t be available on Sunday.

Pule Mmodi Suspended for Season Opener

Pule Mmodi, a key figure in the Chiefs’ attack, is suspended following a red card in their final match of the previous season against Sekhukhune United.

Head coach Nasreddine Nabi acknowledged that Mmodi’s absence is a major blow heading into the clash with Stellenbosch.

“We’re ready for the game, but of course we’re feeling the loss of Pule,” Nabi said ahead of the fixture. “He’s a very important player for us.

But we have to trust the rest of the squad to step up and deliver a good result.”

Transfer Business Still in Progress

While supporters may be concerned about the depth of the squad, Nabi assured fans that the transfer window isn’t closed for them just yet.

Six new players have already been brought in, but there may still be more additions on the way.

Among the names linked with Chiefs is Dzenan Zajmovic, a striker who previously played for TS Galaxy.

But Nabi remained non-committal when asked if a deal was on the cards.

Uncertainty Over Zajmovic’s Status

“I don’t want to say too much about the Galaxy striker,” Nabi said.

“I don’t know if he’s part of the club’s plans or if his paperwork is sorted out.

But if there’s a chance to sign him — especially if he already has local residency — then why not?”

He added, “The window is still open. Our scouting team is working hard. If a good opportunity comes up, we’ll take it.

But I’m looking for players who can offer something more than what we already have — not just the same level.”

Eyes on the Weekend — Can Chiefs Deliver?

With the transfer market still active and new players settling in, all eyes are now on Sunday’s match.

Will Chiefs be able to overcome Mmodi’s absence and kick off their campaign with a statement win against Steve Barker’s Stellies?
