With just a week to go until Election Day, authorities are facing serious allegations of election interference as fires have been set at ballot boxes in two different states.
These incidents have sparked investigations and raised significant concerns about the security of the voting process.
Portland Incident Details
In Southeast Portland, Oregon, police are looking into a fire that occurred early Monday morning, destroying hundreds of ballots.
Officials received the alarm around 3:30 a.m., but by the time they arrived on the scene, security staff had already extinguished the flames.
Reports indicate that an incendiary device was placed inside the ballot box, igniting the fire.
Thankfully, the local explosive disposal unit was able to safely clear the device, although the exact number of impacted ballots remains unclear.
Vancouver’s Fire Report
Meanwhile, in Vancouver, Washington, another ballot box was set ablaze, with flames and smoke visible early that same morning.
Authorities reported that a device was placed outside the ballot box, leading to the fire.
As in Portland, the explosive disposal unit was dispatched to handle the situation safely.
The FBI has also become involved, lending additional resources to the investigation.
Implications for Voters
The Clark County elections auditor shared that the last pickup of ballots from the Vancouver box occurred around 11 a.m. on Saturday.
Any ballots dropped off after that time could be compromised, with hundreds inside the box at the moment the fire was set.
Voters who may have been affected are encouraged to contact their local election offices for guidance.
They might be eligible to fill out a provisional ballot to ensure their voices are still heard.
Growing Concerns Over Election Security
These alarming incidents come just after Pennsylvania launched an investigation into approximately 2,500 suspected fraudulent voter applications.
As Election Day approaches, officials are increasingly concerned about the security of the voting process.
Already, over 43 million people have cast their votes, either in person or by mail, in the 2024 election.
As investigations continue, many are left wondering what further actions will be taken to protect the integrity of the election.
