June Steenkamp, mother of the late model Reeva Steenkamp, has suffered a stroke this week, sending shockwaves through her family and supporters.
The Port Elizabeth woman, who has endured unimaginable loss since her daughter was murdered by Oscar Pistorius in 2014, is now facing another difficult chapter in her life.
Her health crisis coincides with the second anniversary of the death of her husband, Barry Steenkamp, who friends say “died of a broken heart” following Reeva’s tragic murder.
Foundation Speaks Out Against Online Trolls
In response to hurtful comments circulating online, the Reeva Rebecca Steenkamp Foundation publicly condemned trolls who targeted June during her health setback.
The foundation, which supports victims of gender-based violence, shared a heartfelt message on social media thanking the public for their overwhelming support.
“She has always said one of the things that carried her was the love and support she received from friends and strangers alike.
I pray that she will soon be in a position to read them herself,” the post read.
The foundation also issued a firm warning to those spreading negativity:
“Whilst we acknowledge everyone has a right to their opinion, this is not the forum to express a dislike or launch a personal attack against June. The Reeva Rebecca Steenkamp Foundation stands against ALL forms of abuse.
I have blocked those who clearly don’t belong on this page, and will continue to do so.”
In a note of compassion, the administrators added that June herself would likely forgive the trolls, saying they are probably fighting their own battles and need prayers.
Long Road to Recovery
The foundation confirmed that June is conscious but not fully responsive, and that she faces a long rehabilitation process.
Family attorney Tania Koen, who has also represented rape survivor Alison Botha, shared with The South African:
“June is not June at the moment.”
Koen explained that June had been unwell and increasingly frail in recent weeks, and revealed plans for a crowdfunding campaign to help cover her medical and financial needs during recovery.
Community Support and Ongoing Concern
June Steenkamp’s situation has drawn a wave of empathy and concern from the public.
Social media messages, letters, and prayers continue to pour in as the family navigates this difficult time.
The foundation has encouraged everyone to maintain a respectful and supportive approach, emphasizing that June’s focus now is on healing and recovery.
Looking Ahead
While June’s condition remains serious, her family and supporters are hopeful that the love and solidarity surrounding her will help carry her through the recovery process.
The Reeva Rebecca Steenkamp Foundation continues to provide updates and guidance on how the public can contribute to her care, while standing firmly against abuse and harassment during this vulnerable time.
