Big news is shaking up the NFL as the New York Giants prepare to welcome billionaire socialite Julia Koch and other members of the Koch family as minority owners.
The deal, according to reports, involves a non-controlling stake in the storied franchise, pending final agreements and approval from other NFL owners in October.
A Wealthy Newcomer to New York Sports
Julia Koch isn’t new to high-profile investments. Forbes lists her as the richest woman in the world, with a net worth of $82 billion, inherited from her late husband, David Koch, in 2019.
Her New York sports portfolio already includes a 15% stake in BSE Global, the parent company of the Brooklyn Nets, New York Liberty, and Barclays Center, which she and her three children purchased in 2024.
Details of the Giants Deal
Sources indicate the Giants’ minority stake sale was explored after a tough 3-14 season in 2024, with the Mara and Tisch families enlisting Moelis & Co. to assess options back in February.
While exact numbers haven’t been revealed, the team itself is valued between $7.3 billion and $7.85 billion, and reports suggest around 10% of the franchise could be changing hands.
A Storied Franchise with Family Roots
The Giants were founded by Tim Mara in 1925, and the team has remained under family control ever since.
Since 1991, the Mara and Tisch families have each owned 50% of the team, with smaller stakes held by other family members.
The NFL’s updated rules now allow private equity firms to buy up to 10% of a team, paving the way for Koch’s entry.
Giants’ On-Field Struggles and Fan Frustration
Despite being one of the NFL’s most iconic franchises with eight championships, the Giants have faced rough years, recording 10 losing seasons in the last 12.
Fan frustration reached new heights late last season when a plane flew over MetLife Stadium with the message: “Mr Mara enough – plz fix this dumpster fire.”
Hope for the New Season
Looking ahead, the Giants are expected to struggle once again, but management has bolstered the quarterback room with Russell Wilson, Jameis Winston, and Jaxson Dart, offering a glimmer of hope.
Their season kicks off on Sunday against the Washington Commanders at 1 pm ET, marking the start of what fans hope will be a turnaround both on the field and in the ownership ranks.
