Joshua Kimmich’s future at Bayern Munich remains uncertain as he approaches the final months of his contract.
At 30 years old, the midfielder is set to become a free agent this summer, with Bayern eager to extend his stay.
However, his response to their contract offer has reportedly been lukewarm, leaving the club frustrated.
With top European clubs like Arsenal, Liverpool, and PSG expressing interest, Kimmich has options beyond Bayern.
Yet, there is still a possibility that he will commit to the German champions for the foreseeable future.
A Key Figure for Bayern and Germany
Since arriving from RB Leipzig in 2015, Kimmich has been a cornerstone of Bayern’s success.
Over nearly a decade, he has racked up more than 400 appearances and secured 20 major trophies, including eight Bundesliga titles.
His versatility, capable of playing in midfield or at right-back, has made him indispensable.
His influence extends to the international stage as well. With 97 caps for Germany, Kimmich was named the national team captain after Euro 2024, further cementing his leadership credentials.
Kimmich Speaks on His Future
Following Bayern’s dominant 3-0 win over Bayer Leverkusen in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 clash, Kimmich addressed the speculation.
He revealed that he had initially intended to make his decision before the upcoming international break but acknowledged that Bayern preferred a different timeline.
“My plan was to make my decision before the international break,” Kimmich stated after completing the full 90 minutes.
“The club didn’t want that, which is legitimate. There will be a decision soon—definitely before the international break at the latest.”
While he remained tight-lipped about potential suitors, he admitted that other clubs are factoring into his decision.
“Other clubs also play a role in my decision on the future. I won’t mention which clubs, but there will be a decision soon,” he added.
Bayern’s Stance on the Contract Offer
Kimmich’s contract situation has been a hot topic in Munich.
Reports suggest Bayern initially withdrew their offer due to his hesitant response, a move confirmed by CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen.
The club had proposed an extension with no increase in his current salary, which Kimmich was reportedly open to.
However, disagreements over a signing bonus have stalled negotiations.
According to BILD, Bayern was willing to reinstate their previous offer on one condition—Kimmich had to personally approach the club before the Champions League tie against Leverkusen and affirm his commitment.
That, however, did not happen, leaving his future up in the air.
A Crucial Decision Awaits
Despite the uncertainty, Kimmich remains a key figure for Vincent Kompany’s Bayern side.
He had played every minute of the season before an injury sidelined him briefly, but he returned strongly in the win over Leverkusen.
Meanwhile, Bayern continues to dominate domestically, currently sitting eight points ahead of Leverkusen in the Bundesliga.
With the club eager to reclaim the title after losing it last season to Xabi Alonso’s side, Kimmich’s presence could be vital in the run-in.
With the international break beginning on March 17th, all eyes are on Kimmich as he prepares to make a decision that could shape the next phase of his career.
Will he remain at Bayern, or is a new chapter on the horizon? The answer is coming soon.
