MotoGP world champion Jorge Martin is currently recovering in the hospital after a terrifying crash at the Qatar Grand Prix, which left him with 11 broken ribs and a collapsed lung.
The accident occurred when Martin lost control of his bike and began to fall, with Fabio Di Giannantonio trailing closely behind.
Unable to avoid Martin, Di Giannantonio’s front wheel collided with the world champion’s back.
The crash caused Martin to slide several meters across the asphalt before coming to a halt in agonizing pain.
The Horrific Scene Witnessed by His Girlfriend
The tragic incident played out in front of Martin’s girlfriend, Maria Monfort Matutes, who was watching in the paddock.
As the medics quickly arrived at the scene, it became clear just how severe Martin’s injuries were.
To relieve pressure on his lungs, doctors had to insert a drain to remove the air from his collapsed lung.
Despite the pain, there was some good news: no damage was found to his brain, cervical spine, or abdominal organs.
Martin’s Reassuring Words to Fans
In a positive turn, Martin, 27, took to Instagram to share an update with his fans.
He expressed his gratitude, acknowledging that things could have been far worse.
“I thank God because what happened to me could have been much worse.
I’ll try to keep you informed,” he wrote, offering reassurance to his supporters.
A History of Injuries and a Shaken Di Giannantonio
This latest crash is not the first time that Martin has faced a tough recovery.
Earlier in the season, he had sustained serious injuries during the pre-season, suffering multiple bone fractures.
However, the crash in Qatar has shaken not just Martin but also Di Giannantonio, who expressed deep concern after the incident. “He was right in front of me for a while, and I was pretty close to him,” Di Giannantonio recalled.
“When he fell, his body was completely in front of my bike.
I had no chance to avoid him; so I touched him. I was thinking about him the whole time because I was very worried.”
Uncertainty About Martin’s Return to Racing
Martin’s condition is still being closely monitored in the hospital, and it is uncertain when he will be able to return to racing.
With such serious injuries, it seems highly unlikely that he will be fit to compete in the upcoming Jerez Grand Prix, scheduled for April 25.
Fans and teammates alike will be hoping for a swift recovery, but it may take some time before the world champion is back on the track.
