As the buzz around Chelsea’s summer transfers continues to grow, club legend John Obi Mikel has stepped in to highlight what he believes is the real issue holding the team back—the goalkeeper position.
With optimism surrounding Enzo Maresca’s second season and new signings making headlines, Mikel says there’s one critical area that could make or break Chelsea’s season: a reliable No. 1 between the posts.
Strong Signings and High Hopes for Maresca’s Second Year
Maresca impressed in his debut season at Stamford Bridge—leading Chelsea to European silverware and back into the Champions League.
And he’s not slowing down. The Blues have already brought in Liam Delap, Joao Pedro, and Jamie Gittens to sharpen their attacking game ahead of the new campaign.
But while attention is on forwards and flair, Mikel believes that it’s the last line of defence that really needs fixing.
Mikel Doesn’t Hold Back on the Goalkeeping Situation
Speaking on talkSPORT, Mikel was brutally honest about his doubts regarding Robert Sanchez, Chelsea’s current first-choice keeper.
Last season, Sanchez and Filip Jorgensen both took turns in goal but failed to lock down the role with authority.
“We need another top goalkeeper because Sanchez is not doing it,” Mikel said.
“We can’t go into the new season with Sanchez, I’m sorry.”
He added that nearly every Chelsea fan would agree, saying Sanchez isn’t the kind of keeper who can help win trophies—at least not at the top level the club expects.
Club World Cup Didn’t Change Mikel’s Mind
Maresca has continued to put his faith in Sanchez during the ongoing Club World Cup in the USA, even as Chelsea prepare to face PSG in the final.
But Mikel isn’t swayed by a few clean sheets.
“So far, so good,” he said, “but he’s made mistakes, and we’ve just been lucky they haven’t cost us goals.”
He emphasized that while things might be going well in a short tournament, a long season packed with the Premier League, Champions League, and domestic cups is another story.
“Look at Liverpool and Arsenal,” Mikel Warns
Mikel pointed to Chelsea’s biggest rivals—Liverpool and Arsenal—and noted how having world-class keepers like Alisson and Ramsdale makes a huge difference.
“That area of the pitch needs to be sorted out, and I’m sure the owners know that,” he added.
Chelsea’s Next Move: Young Talent or Big Name?
Chelsea have already made a move to strengthen the position by signing Mike Penders, a promising 19-year-old Belgian from Genk for £17 million.
But the club reportedly plans to send him out on loan, meaning he’s not yet a serious contender for the No. 1 shirt.
Meanwhile, Chelsea have been repeatedly linked with high-profile goalkeepers, including AC Milan’s Mike Maignan and PSG’s Gianluigi Donnarumma.
Donnarumma Likely Staying Put at PSG
Despite the buzz around Donnarumma’s future, the Italian star appears to be staying in Paris for now.
His contract with PSG runs until 2026, and he recently addressed the speculation.
“My priority is to stay at PSG and sign a new deal,” Donnarumma said last month.
“I don’t think there will be any problems in the negotiations.”
So, while Chelsea may admire him, a move looks unlikely—at least this summer.
What’s Next for Chelsea’s Goalkeeping Dilemma?
With preseason well underway and the new season fast approaching, all eyes are on how Chelsea will handle this vital position.
Will they invest in another top-tier goalkeeper, or stick with what they have and hope for the best?
If Mikel’s words are any indication, fans might not be patient if that decision costs them silverware down the line.
