As 2024 comes to a close, many are gearing up to celebrate the New Year with dazzling fireworks displays.
However, the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) has issued a stern warning about the responsible use of fireworks.
Irresponsible behavior could lead to fines ranging from R1,000 to R1,500.
Here’s what you need to know to avoid breaking the law and start 2025 on the right note.
The Cost of Irresponsible Fireworks Use
The JMPD announced that hefty fines will be imposed for improper fireworks use during year-end celebrations.
The fines, which range from R1,000 to R1,500, are determined by the severity of the offense.
R1,000 Fine Offenses:
- Setting off fireworks near animals
- Igniting fireworks close to hospitals or old age homes
R1,500 Fine Offenses:
- Lighting fireworks within 500 meters of petrol stations
- Allowing minors to ignite fireworks
- Organizing a fireworks display without the required permissions
- Using unauthorized locations or failing to adhere to Council-designated premises and guidelines
- Dealing with fireworks without proper licensing and written authority from Emergency Medical Services
Where and When You Can Use Fireworks
The JMPD has outlined specific days and times when fireworks are permitted, ensuring celebrations are both enjoyable and safe:
- Permitted Days: Guy Fawkes Day, Diwali, Christmas Eve, Day of Goodwill, New Year’s Eve, and New Year’s Day
- Permitted Times: From 7 PM to 10 PM on regular days, and from 11 PM to 1 AM on New Year’s Eve
The police emphasize that fireworks are strictly prohibited in public places like schools, hospitals, old age homes, and within 500 meters of petrol stations or explosives factories.
Enforcement and Monitoring by JMPD
The JMPD has assured residents that compliance with these regulations will be actively monitored.
Offenders will face appropriate legal action, reinforcing the importance of adhering to safety guidelines.
Do You Think These Fines Are Effective?
The question remains: are these penalties significant enough to encourage responsible behavior?
Residents are encouraged to share their thoughts via email, WhatsApp, or social media platforms.
Let’s usher in 2025 safely and responsibly, ensuring celebrations bring joy rather than harm.
Follow the rules, and enjoy a spectacular New Year’s Eve!
