US President Joe Biden Praised for Mentioning All Blacks in Irish Parliament Speech After Gaffe
US President Joe Biden received applause from the Irish lawmakers after mentioning the All Blacks in his speech during a joint session at the Irish parliament.
This was a marked contrast to a previous gaffe he made by referring to the team as the “Black and Tans” during a speech at a pub in Northern Ireland.
The president had been given a tie by his rugby-playing cousin Rob Kearney, who helped Ireland beat the All Blacks in Chicago in 2016.
Biden, who is known for his Irish heritage, also spoke about a rugby ball signed by the Irish rugby team in the Oval Office.
Making Amends for His All Blacks Error
Biden’s previous comment about the All Blacks went viral, prompting a wave of criticism on social media.
However, he corrected his error during his parliamentary speech, making sure to reference the team correctly.
The president was also happy to talk about his own rugby-playing days, stating that rugby was safer than American football.
Joe Biden With His Cousin and the All Blacks
Biden’s cousin, Rob Kearney, who is one of Ireland’s greatest rugby stars, presented him with the tie, and the rugby ball that the Irish rugby team used when they beat the All Blacks in Dublin in 2021.
Biden expressed his appreciation for his cousin’s gift, saying that he always keeps a little bit of Ireland close to him, even when he is in Washington.
He also reminisced about his rugby-playing days and joked about the sport being played by “nuts.”
