Fresh off a big move to one of Europe’s top clubs, 19-year-old Jobe Bellingham wasted no time making his mark.
The younger brother of England star Jude Bellingham scored his very first goal for Borussia Dortmund, helping them to a thrilling 4–3 win over South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns at the Club World Cup.
Following Big Brother’s Footsteps—But Carving His Own Path
It was only a few weeks ago that Jobe made headlines with his £32 million transfer from Sunderland to Borussia Dortmund.
The move instantly drew comparisons to Jude’s own career path, having made a similar leap to Dortmund from Birmingham City.
But if Jobe is feeling any pressure to live up to the family name, he’s not showing it.
After a brief debut off the bench against Fluminense earlier in the tournament, he was given a starting role against Sundowns—and he delivered in style.
A Confident Finish to Cap a Strong First Half
With Dortmund already leading 2–1, Jobe seized his moment just before the halftime whistle.
Inside the box, he met a loose ball with a crisp half-volley, guiding it into the bottom corner.
It was a composed finish that spoke volumes about his confidence and composure at this level.
His goal capped off a strong opening 45 minutes for Dortmund, who had fallen behind early after Lucas Ribeiro’s solo effort stunned the defence and gave Sundowns a surprise lead.
But Dortmund hit back quickly through Felix Nmecha after a sloppy mistake by goalkeeper Ronwen Williams, then added a second via a brilliant header from Guirassy—before Jobe put the icing on the first-half cake.
Second Half Brings Drama, But Dortmund Holds On
Sundowns came out swinging in the second half.
Ten minutes after the break, Rayners smacked the woodwork as they tried to claw their way back into the game.
But Dortmund caught a lucky break soon after when Daniel Svensson’s cross was deflected into the net by defender Khuliso Mudau.
Still, Sundowns weren’t done. Just two minutes later, Teboho Mokoena floated in a free kick that once again found Rayners—this time, he needed two attempts, but made sure the second counted.
Substitute Lebo Mothiba then added a late goal in the 90th minute to make it 4–3, but the South African champions ran out of time before they could find an equaliser.
Jobe’s Journey from Sunderland to the Big Stage
Jobe Bellingham arrived in Dortmund on the back of an impressive run at Sunderland, where he helped the club secure a return to the Premier League.
Last season, he played in 43 matches across all competitions and was named Championship Young Player of the Season—a clear sign of the talent Dortmund invested in.
Now, with his first goal in black and yellow under his belt, Jobe is showing that he’s not just Jude’s younger brother—he’s a rising star in his own right.
