Joao Pedro chooses to join Chelsea over Newcastle United and returns to London after two years in Brighton

After two years away from the capital, Joao Pedro has finally made his move back to London, signing for Chelsea this past July.

The 23-year-old Brazilian forward admitted that nostalgia for the city played a big part in his decision, even turning down interest from Newcastle United.

Choosing Chelsea Over Newcastle

Pedro, who impressed at Brighton last season with 10 goals and six assists, was a hot target for several clubs over the summer.

Newcastle United, managed by Eddie Howe, even submitted a £50 million bid to sign the striker, hoping to secure his services for the north of England.

Despite the Magpies’ interest, Pedro ultimately chose to head west along the A23 to Stamford Bridge.

“When I was in Brighton, I was missing London a little bit,” Pedro told The Evening Standard.

“I had a chance to move to another club, but I chose Chelsea because it’s in London, it’s a great club and I knew in my head it was the right move.”

A Strong Start at Stamford Bridge

Pedro hasn’t wasted any time making his mark at Chelsea.

Since joining Enzo Maresca’s side, he has contributed to their Club World Cup success and scored twice in Chelsea’s first three Premier League games.

His early form suggests he’s adapting quickly to life at one of England’s top clubs.

Big Ambitions for the Premier League and Beyond

The Brazilian striker has set his sights high, aiming for both team and personal glory.

When asked about Chelsea’s Premier League chances, Pedro said: “It’s too early to say whether we’re going to win it or not, but if you watch us, you’ll see we have a good chance. I agree.”

He’s also dreaming big individually, hoping to challenge for the Golden Boot and, one day, the Ballon d’Or.

“Big clubs from England have bought the top strikers from Europe this summer,” he added.

“It will be interesting to compete with them for the Golden Boot. It would be a dream one day to win the Ballon d’Or. I believe in myself, everything is possible. Maybe it can happen.”

Facing Tough Competition in the Premier League

Pedro will need to keep up his scoring pace if he wants to challenge the league’s elite.

Mohamed Salah and Erling Haaland continue to shine for Liverpool and Manchester City, while Arsenal’s Viktor Gyokeres has also started strong.

Haaland currently leads the early season scorers with three goals, with Pedro in joint-second on two.

Eyes on International Glory

Chelsea’s new star isn’t just focused on England.

Pedro is set to feature for Brazil in a World Cup Qualifier against Chile tonight, followed by a trip to Bolivia on Wednesday.

With Brazil already qualified for the 2026 tournament in the USA, Canada, and Mexico, Pedro will no doubt be hoping to carry his club form into international success as well.
