Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula has assured airlines that there is sufficient fuel at OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg.
The recent floods in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) impacted logistical issues which in turn saw South Africa’s biggest airport experience some supply shortages in jet fuel. Heavy rainfall has left behind a trail of destruction, prompting government to declare a state of disaster in KZN. Thousands of homes and other infrastructure have been damaged or washed away.
While the South African Petroleum Industry Association (SAPIA) had said the situation wasn’t exactly a crisis, the shortage reportedly led to at least one airline cancelling flights over the weekend.
MBALULA: SA AIRPORTS HAVE ENOUGH FUEL
But Fikile Mbalula says the fuel shortage problem at OR Tambo International Airport has since been resolved following between the Departments of Transport and Mineral Resources and Energy and the Airports Company South Africa (ACSA).
Mbalula says both departments were mandated to put measures in place to address the jet fuel shortage experienced at the airport.
“We are pleased that the Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) has worked tirelessly to resolve this challenge, working with relevant stakeholders and other organs of state. The jet fuel supply to OR Tambo International has now been stabilised,”

In addition, the minister has assured the aviation sector that there is adequate jet fuel at all airports across the country. He says ACSA is doing all it can to work closely with oil suppliers to ensure that is enough stock at all times.
Mbalula has further encouraged airlines to engage ACSA for certainty as opposed to resorting to drastic measures like cancelling flights.
“We also welcome the Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) issued by ACSA, advising all airlines, both international and domestic, on measures being implemented to obviate disruptions to air services. The aviation sector is a critical enabler of economic activity which requires our support in ensuring that it makes its contribution to economic recovery in the aftermath of the COVID-19 devastation,”
