Jeremy Clarkson has opened up about how he’s been making serious changes to his lifestyle, including adopting a new fitness routine, all in an effort to extend his life after a health scare.
The former Top Gear host, now 64, said he is doing everything he can to stay alive, particularly for the sake of his grandchildren.
They bring him so much joy, and he wants to be there for them for as long as possible.
Focused on Family and Health
Clarkson shared that his grandkids are “hilarious” and “so wonderful” that he wants to savor every moment with them.
This desire to enjoy more time with his family has driven him to take his health more seriously.
In fact, he has started Pilates, a method he’s found effective after experimenting with different exercise routines.
In a lighthearted column for The Sunday Times, he even joked about trying a new weight-loss drug called “Muntjac,” poking fun at its similarities to Ozempic.
A Major Health Scare
Last October, Clarkson had to undergo an urgent heart surgery after experiencing a sudden health decline.
He admitted that he was “maybe” just days away from death when he had the two-hour procedure.
Since then, he’s been focused on “buying time” for himself.
While this has been both physically painful and financially costly, he believes it’s a better investment than spending money on things like a new watch.
A Reluctant Exercise Journey
Despite his current commitment to fitness, Clarkson has had a rocky relationship with exercise in the past.
He’s openly admitted to loathing cycling and finding gyms “weird.”
Yoga didn’t fare much better in his eyes either, with the idea of contorting his body into awkward poses being less than appealing.
His partner, Lisa Hogan, even bought a fancy piece of exercise equipment that quickly turned into a dust collector.
After realizing that indoor workouts weren’t his thing, Clarkson gave walking a try—but only under certain conditions, like mild weather and when he wasn’t busy.
Discovering Pilates
Eventually, Clarkson discovered Pilates, which he describes with a blend of humor and amazement.
He’s particularly fond of the Pilates Reformer machine, which he compares to something from a “sex orgy dungeon” because of its straps and adjustable top.
Despite the quirky description, he’s found Pilates surprisingly effective.
He’s even shocked to find that his legs feel sore the day after a session, as the workouts don’t feel particularly strenuous in the moment.
A Close Call with Death
It wasn’t long ago that Clarkson began experiencing troubling symptoms after a holiday swim, including tightness in his chest and pins and needles in his left arm.
A trip to the doctor led to the discovery that he needed a stent to open a narrowed artery.
His doctors were frank, telling him that he was very close to death.
Following this scare, Clarkson was advised to make significant lifestyle changes, including replacing some of his work with a gentler activity like golf.
While he’s reluctant to slow down, he’s committed to sticking with his new diet, although he admits it’s been tough to adjust to a more plant-based way of eating.
Though he’s skeptical about the long-term appeal of exercise, Clarkson’s recent health crisis has certainly given him a new perspective on the importance of taking care of himself.
