Jabrill Peppers, the former New England Patriots safety, is reportedly heading to Pittsburgh, according to NFL Network.
The news comes after a surprising release from New England just before the start of the season, leaving fans and analysts buzzing about the veteran’s next move.
Daily Mail has reached out to Peppers’ representatives and the Steelers for confirmation, but sources suggest the deal is imminent.
Peppers’ Tumultuous 2024 Season
Peppers’ last season with the Patriots was anything but smooth.
He appeared in only six games after an October arrest for cocaine possession and alleged assault on his on-off girlfriend.
Though the allegations were serious, Peppers’ attorney rejected them, and in January, he was acquitted of assault and battery charges.
While he admitted to cocaine possession, that charge was ultimately dropped.
He still faces a $9.5 million civil lawsuit from the woman involved. Speaking after the acquittal, Peppers said, “I stand for what’s right.
I need to protect myself a little more… record it because that might be the only thing that saves you.”
Patriots’ Roster Shake-Up
Entering his fourth year with New England, Peppers had made the initial 53-man roster and was slated to start alongside Kyle Dugger in a revamped defensive scheme.
However, his release was part of a broader trend of moving on from holdover players and contracts from the Belichick and Jerod Mayo era.
Peppers’ departure surprised many, given his performance and veteran status, but it opened the door for a fresh start elsewhere.
Joining a Rebuilt Steelers Team
Now, Peppers is set to join a retooled Pittsburgh Steelers squad, who are 1-0 to start the season.
The team has bolstered its roster with high-profile veterans including quarterback Aaron Rodgers and wide receiver DK Metcalf.
The secondary has also seen upgrades with Super Bowl champion cornerback Darius Slay and former All-Pro Jalen Ramsey.
Peppers arrives at a critical time for the Steelers. Starting strong safety Deshon Elliott has been sidelined with knee issues, including missing the season opener against the New York Jets.
Career Highlights and Earnings
The 29-year-old Michigan alum signed an extension with the Patriots in July 2024 after posting 138 total tackles and two interceptions over the previous two seasons.
Over his career, Peppers has earned more than $36 million, according to Spotrac.
With experience and versatility in the defensive backfield, Peppers could make an immediate impact in Pittsburgh, helping the Steelers solidify their revamped secondary.
