Humble Beginnings Shape Big Dreams
Growing up in Alexandra, Itumeleng often felt like she lived “two lives.”
At school in Rivonia, she spoke English, but at home in Alex, she switched back to isiZulu.
Despite the contrasts, her childhood was filled with carefree adventures, street games, and dreams that stretched far beyond her immediate surroundings.
Her broadcasting journey started early at Alex FM, where she became a news anchor at just 19.
Soon after, she landed her breakthrough as the host of the award-winning radio show Feminine First Touch on Massiv Metro.
Later, she made history as the first female anchor of the African Football League on SABC.
Even as a child, Banda was drawn to television. “During school holidays, I would be part of YoTV’s Summer Splash audience.
One day they asked if anyone wanted to do a link, and I raised my hand.
Afterward, production even spoke to my mom about bringing me on board,” she recalls.
Though her mother encouraged her to prioritize school, those early experiences planted the seeds of a broadcasting career.
Education and Early Career Milestones
Itumeleng pursued Film and Television studies at the University of Johannesburg, a foundation that prepared her for her current roles with SuperSport Schools and Soweto TV.
Shows like Zaziwa and personalities like Pearl Modiadie inspired her love for broadcasting, shaping her approach to media with authenticity and connection.
Her big turning point came in 2020 when she won the Momentum Gsport Woman in Radio award.
“Going up against women I admired showed me that I belong in sports media,” she says.
That recognition affirmed her talent and opened doors she hadn’t even planned for.
In fact, Banda admits, sports media wasn’t her original goal—she simply wanted to work, and her skills led her there.

Sports broadcasting has long been male-dominated, but Banda has forged her path with persistence and confidence.
“Sometimes in life, you don’t necessarily get what you want, but what you don’t want is possibly what you need,” she reflects.

Her role at SuperSport Schools allows her to connect directly with youth development.
“Covering kids today who are tomorrow’s stars is powerful.
It inspires me too and reminds me that my dreams are valid,” she says, reflecting her belief in nurturing the next generation of talent.

Itumeleng’s advocacy extends beyond her own journey.
She honors women who paved the way, like Carol Tshabalala, while also highlighting the vital support of her mother. “She is my rock.
That is my heartbeat, every fibre of my being,” Banda says.
She believes in lifting others up, emphasizing that supporting another woman does nothing to diminish her own success.
Ambitions That Reach Across Africa
Looking ahead, Banda refuses to be confined by categories or borders.
“I want to cover African football, World Cups, and more. That’s definitely on my list,” she shares.
Her vision is expansive, reflecting a career trajectory that is just beginning to unfold on a continental stage.
