Iran has made a bold statement in response to recent remarks by U.S. President Donald Trump, warning that if military action is taken against the country, British forces will not be spared.
This comes after Trump’s letter to Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei earlier this month, where he urged Tehran to strike a new nuclear deal, or face military consequences.
Trump emphasized that there were two options for Iran: either negotiate a deal or face military intervention.
Iran Responds with Aggressive Threats
Iran’s response to Trump’s message was swift and severe.
Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Qalibaf delivered a fiery speech on Friday, making it clear that if the U.S. proceeds with an attack, Iran will not hesitate to target not only American but also British military bases.
In his speech, Qalibaf warned that an attack on Iran would set off a chain reaction, sparking chaos throughout the region.
He added that both U.S. and allied forces would be at risk, stating, “Their bases and those of their allies will not be safe.”
Tehran Targets Diego Garcia Base
In a chilling escalation, a senior Iranian military official confirmed that Iran would target the joint U.S.-UK base on Diego Garcia, located in the Chagos Islands, if Trump follows through with his military threats.
The official made it clear that no distinction would be made between British, American, or other allied forces, declaring that anyone stationed at bases used by U.S. forces would be considered a target.
Iranian state media amplified these threats this week, announcing that Tehran possesses advanced weaponry capable of reaching the Diego Garcia base, including the Khorramshahr ballistic missile and Shahed 136B drone.
The base’s strategic significance, particularly its proximity to U.S. bombers that can target underground sites in Iran, has placed it squarely in Tehran’s sights.
U.S. Military Forces in the Region Ramp Up
In response to rising tensions, the U.S. has bolstered its military presence on Diego Garcia.
Satellite imagery revealed that three B-2 stealth bombers were stationed at the base, known for their advanced capabilities and stealth technology.
These bombers, designed for penetrating enemy defenses, are equipped to carry both conventional and nuclear payloads.
The U.S. is also reportedly increasing its military assets at the base, including additional aircraft and C-17 transport planes, which are capable of swiftly deploying troops and supplies.
The Strategic Importance of Diego Garcia
Diego Garcia is a vital military hub for both the U.S. and the UK, as it provides a crucial launch point for long-range bombers targeting regional threats, including Iran and Yemen.
Positioned strategically outside the reach of most rebel forces in the Middle East, it serves as a safe staging area for military operations.
According to a UK government spokesperson, Diego Garcia plays a significant role in maintaining regional and international security.
Diplomatic Hopes Amidst Rising Tensions
While tensions continue to escalate, there are still glimmers of hope for diplomacy.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi has suggested that Trump’s letter, despite its threatening tone, leaves room for negotiation.
However, Araqchi stressed that any talks would be impossible unless the U.S. shifts its current “maximum pressure” policy.
Meanwhile, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei dismissed Trump’s overtures as deceptive, calling them part of a broader strategy to impose undue pressure on Tehran.
UK and International Reactions
In the wake of Iran’s warnings, the UK has strongly condemned the threats against British forces.
A government spokesperson stated that the UK is working closely with regional partners to de-escalate the situation.
With around 4,000 British and American military personnel stationed on Diego Garcia, the international community remains on edge, watching closely as both sides stand at the brink of potential conflict.
As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen whether diplomacy can prevail, or if military action will further escalate the already volatile tensions between the U.S., the UK, and Iran.
