Interpol issues red notices for Gupta brothers – what does this mean?

It seems South African authorities are getting closer to finally catching members of the Gupta family, as Interpol has reportedly issued a red notice for two of the brothers.

Various media reports have cited the Investigating Directorate’s now former head Advocate Hermione Cronje, as saying the notices were obtained for Rajesh and Atul Gupta. Interpol reportedly approved the notices in January 2022, just a month prior, and also took steps to clear them.

The Gupta family is at the centre of serious allegations of corruption in the country. They are said to have used their proximity to former president Jacob Zuma to unlawfully obtain a string of lucrative state contracts during his tenure. Their deeds have been described as a grand looting exercise only aimed at enriching themselves at the expense of the country’s coffers, and nothing else.
