Interior Designer Celia Sawyer Claims Netflix Copied Her TV Show Idea About Kinky Rooms in London

Interior Designer Celia Sawyer Claims Netflix Copied Her TV Show Idea About Kinky Rooms in London

Celia Sawyer is best known for bringing luxury to extremes—think 24-carat gold bathtubs on private jets or glam makeovers for superyachts.

But behind all that bling, the Channel 4 Four Rooms star and self-made interior design queen has hit a serious nerve.

And it’s not about fabrics or furniture—this time, it’s about what she claims is a stolen TV idea.

The 58-year-old designer, often nicknamed the “Queen of Bling,” says she pitched a sexy new concept to Netflix called Kinky Rooms.

The pitch? A bold, design-led show that creates bespoke rooms tailored to people’s adventurous lifestyles.

Netflix’s response, according to Celia? A straight-up rejection with the note that “they were going to delete it.”

Then Came the Netflix Déjà Vu That Left Her Shocked

Celia didn’t think much more of it at the time.

She got back to her ultra-high-end design business, where she dreams up spaces for yachts, mansions, and everything in between from her plush Mayfair office near Claridge’s.

But a year later, she was in for a jaw-dropping surprise.

Netflix released a show called How to Build a Sex Room.

And for Celia, the resemblance was uncanny.

“It was exactly the same idea, exactly the same format,” she says.

One episode featured a polyamorous family and their custom-designed dungeon—eerily similar to the ideas she’d outlined in her pitch.

Sawyer had even included a concept centered around a polyamorous client, among other adventurous briefs.

The Netflix series? It mirrored that and more, with episodes exploring everything from spa-like intimacy rooms to edgy, rock-inspired sex basements.

Celia Fought Back—But Netflix Didn’t Budge

Not one to sit back quietly, Sawyer fired off a letter to Netflix, pointing out the similarities.

What she got in return wasn’t an apology—or even a conversation.

Instead, it was a legal letter, flatly stating that they hadn’t taken her idea.

“You put a lot of work into this stuff and then that happens,” she says. “I was really upset.

It was awful.” For someone who built her career from leaving school at 15 to running a luxury design empire, it stung to feel dismissed.

Meanwhile, Things Were Heating Up at Home Too

And if all that weren’t enough, Celia was also dealing with a property dispute closer to home.

She and her husband Nick, a 63-year-old food commercials director, found themselves locked in a two-year-long battle with a neighbour in Sandbanks, Dorset.

The issue? The neighbour’s home renovation left them feeling like their private garden was on display.

“It made me feel very uncomfortable sunbathing in my bikini,” she admits.

The situation became so frustrating that the couple are now planning to sell the £4 million seaside home and spend more time at their Barbados retreat.

As for Netflix? They’ve declined to comment.

“I shouldn’t have told you that.” The album is said to be a follow-up to Hackney Diamonds and is being produced by Andrew Watt at Metropolis Studios in Chiswick.

Tour plans may have been shelved due to venue and travel logistics, but according to Jo, “They want to tour again.”
