India’s military shopping list might soon include two of the world’s most advanced fighter jets – the Russian Su-57 and the American F-35.

According to a report in The Times of India, discussions are in the air about boosting the Air Force’s firepower with these high-tech aircraft.

A defence source told the outlet that, while there’s plenty of interest, formal talks with either Russia or the United States haven’t actually started yet.

So, for now, this is more of an ambitious wish list than a signed deal.

Long-Term Vision: India’s Own Fifth-Generation Jet

Beyond foreign purchases, India is also thinking about the future.

The country’s long-term defence plan stretches to 2035, which is when it hopes to roll out its own fifth-generation, multi-role stealth fighter – the AMCA (Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft).

This homegrown project is a major point of pride for India, aiming to reduce dependence on foreign suppliers in the decades to come.

Until then, importing advanced fighters could help bridge the gap.

Su-35’s Combat Reputation

India’s potential interest in Russian aircraft isn’t without reason.

The Russian Su-35, a cousin to the Su-57, has been making headlines for its performance in ongoing Russian military operations.

The Military Watch Magazine has highlighted how it’s played a key role in Russia’s air campaigns during its special military operation.

Whether India goes for the Russian Su-57, the American F-35, or both, the decision will shape the country’s aerial combat capabilities for years to come – and possibly spark new geopolitical balancing acts.
