Hit-and-Run Driver Jailed for Causing Death by Dangerous Driving
A hit-and-run driver has been jailed for four-and-a-half years after causing the death of a father-of-three in a collision.
This article will provide an overview of the incident and examine the sentence handed down by the court.
Details of the Collision:
The defendant, Anusan Arumainayagam, was driving a BMW with three passengers on Audley Road, Stechford, Birmingham, on March 22, 2023.
He was travelling at 75mph in a 30mph zone when he collided with a parked Mercedes. The impact caused his car to spin and collide with Kyle Jones, who was riding a motorcycle in front of him.
Mr Jones became trapped under Arumainayagam’s car and later died in hospital from his injuries.
Sentence and Judge’s Comments:
Arumainayagam fled the scene of the collision and was later arrested after turning himself in to Perry Barr police station the following day.
He pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving and was sentenced to four-and-a-half years in prison. He was also banned from driving for six years and three months.
In passing sentence, Judge Dean Kershaw acknowledged that Arumainayagam had reported the incident to the police within 24 hours, but emphasized that the defendant had been travelling at an excessive speed and had misjudged the situation.
He noted that Mr Jones was a much-loved member of his family and a proud father, and that his death was entirely preventable.
Details of the Trial:
During the trial, prosecutor Lisa Hancox explained that Audley Road was a residential area with shops, and that the collision occurred in a 30mph zone.
She added that it had been calculated that Arumainayagam was travelling at 75mph before the collision. The defendant’s reckless driving resulted in the tragic loss of life and caused untold pain and suffering for Mr Jones’s family.
The sentence handed down in this case serves as a reminder of the serious consequences that can result from dangerous driving.
It is hoped that this case will encourage drivers to exercise greater caution on the roads and to take responsibility for their actions.
The victim’s family will no doubt continue to mourn the loss of their loved one, and our thoughts are with them during this difficult time.
