Husband, wife, and their three daughters from Houston perish in horrific Mother’s Day car accident while driving to Dallas

Plans for a joyful Mother’s Day weekend ended in unimaginable tragedy for a Texas family.

What started as a happy road trip to Dallas quickly became a scene of devastation after a deadly crash on Interstate 45 in Houston.

A family of five lost their lives despite the brave efforts of bystanders who rushed to help in the chaos.

The Family and the Journey

Hermenegildo Melendez, 55, his wife Veronica Cerda, 53, and their three daughters—Denise (26), Rebecca (20), and Daniela (18)—were traveling together in their 2023 Ford F-150.

They left their home in Greenspoint, Texas, on a sunny Saturday afternoon, excited to spend the holiday weekend as a close-knit family.

The Crash That Changed Everything

Near the 157-mile marker on I-45, things took a devastating turn.

A 2016 Dodge pickup, driven by 42-year-old Toriano Fair from Dallas, lost control, striking a guardrail on the right side of the highway.

The vehicle then crossed into the center median, breaking through the cable barrier and colliding head-on with the Melendez family’s truck going northbound.

The impact caused both vehicles to erupt into flames immediately.

Witnesses who saw thick smoke quickly stopped to help, but despite their heroic efforts, all five family members inside the Ford were tragically killed.

The other driver was pulled from the burning wreckage and rushed to the hospital in critical condition.

Heroes on the Scene

Among those who stopped was Mujtaba Quadri, a local Houston resident driving home with his wife.

He described the scene as chaotic, with about seven people working frantically to assist.

Quadri tried to use water to fight the fire and helped rescue the other driver, but the fire’s intensity was overwhelming.

“I wish I could have seen the others to help,” Quadri said. “The fire was raging so badly, I only saw one person.”

Sadly, the family inside the burning truck was not visible to the rescuers, and their lives were lost at the scene.

Grieving Loved Ones and Community

Jillian De Haro, a close family friend of the oldest daughter, shared her heartbreak: “They were a really close-knit family. This wasn’t supposed to happen to them.”

She recalled the moment she learned the tragic news, explaining how a call from troopers shook her world.

De Haro described Veronica Cerda as “one of those best friends your mom always wants you to have,” highlighting the deep bonds the family had with friends and community.

Response and Support

Emergency responders from multiple agencies, including volunteer firefighters and EMS teams, worked together to extinguish the fire and manage the scene.

In the wake of the tragedy, family members created a GoFundMe page to help cover funeral and memorial costs.

The fundraiser emphasizes the family’s warmth, kindness, and how deeply their sudden loss has impacted everyone who knew them.

As of Thursday morning, the campaign had raised nearly $70,800 toward a $90,000 goal, reflecting the outpouring of support from the community.

The message on the page reminds everyone of how small acts of kindness can bring hope even in the darkest moments.

Investigation and What Lies Ahead

The Texas Department of Public Safety is still investigating the cause of the crash, with no official details released yet.

The community continues to mourn and support the family as they navigate this unimaginable loss.

This heartbreaking accident reminds us how quickly life can change—and the importance of compassion and unity when tragedy strikes.
