It’s shaping up to be a tense summer transfer window for Manchester United—and they may be preparing for Plan B.
After being made aware that top target Viktor Gyokeres is leaning toward a move to Arsenal, the Red Devils are now exploring other striker options.
One name standing out? Hugo Ekitike, the 22-year-old French talent who just wrapped up a standout season at Eintracht Frankfurt.
Ekitike Emerges as an Option with Star Potential
Ekitike has quickly grabbed attention after netting 22 goals in 45 games for Frankfurt last season.
It’s a massive leap in form after his time at Paris Saint-Germain, who sold him in 2024 for a modest £14 million.
Now, just a year later, his price has skyrocketed—Frankfurt reportedly value him at £80 million.
Despite that hefty fee, Chelsea and Liverpool are also keeping tabs, but no one has moved decisively yet.
Amorim’s Original Plan for Gyokeres Hits a Wall
Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim had been eyeing a reunion with Viktor Gyokeres, with hopes of bringing in a proven goal machine after a disappointing 15th-place Premier League finish and a Europa League final loss.
But things aren’t going to plan. Arsenal seem to be leading the race for Gyokeres, and although they remain focused on Benjamin Sesko at RB Leipzig, they could return for Gyokeres if that move collapses.
Ekitike Has a Soft Spot for United
If United fans are looking for a sign of hope in all this, here it is: when Ekitike was asked which club he supported growing up, he didn’t hesitate. “Manchester United,” he said.
That kind of childhood admiration could help sway his decision, especially if United push hard for the deal.
But there’s no denying his valuation may be a stumbling block, especially with no European football on offer at Old Trafford next season.
Other Targets in the Mix: Mbeumo and Semenyo
United aren’t placing all their hopes on Ekitike either.
They’re also working on a potential deal for Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo.
However, their initial £55 million bid was turned down this week.
Meanwhile, Spurs—who just officially unveiled Thomas Frank as their new manager—are reportedly looking to hijack United’s Mbeumo move and are also keeping tabs on Bournemouth’s Antoine Semenyo, a player United also admire.
What’s Next for United?
With so many moving parts and rising price tags, United’s transfer strategy looks like it’s shifting fast.
If Gyokeres really is Arsenal-bound and Ekitike’s valuation stays sky-high, United may need to move quickly and creatively.
Whether they make a splash with a big-name striker or spread the investment across a few attacking options remains to be seen.
One thing’s for sure: they can’t afford another underwhelming season—and the pressure’s on to get this window right.
