Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has recently spoken about the significant impact Rulani Mokwena had during his tenure at Mamelodi Sundowns.
The 38-year-old coach’s achievements are certainly impressive.
In just four years at the helm of Sundowns, Mokwena led the team to four league titles and secured several domestic cups, marking a period of success for the club.
Broos acknowledged that coaching at a top-tier club like Sundowns requires exceptional skills, as the club consistently brings in the best talent from across the league.
The Challenge of Managing an Elite Squad
However, Broos pointed out that despite Mokwena’s many accomplishments, his inability to win the CAF Champions League with such a talented squad remains a major disappointment.
“Mamelodi Sundowns are fortunate to have the best players in the league every year.
They have a deep pool of 35 players, which is extraordinary,” said Broos, highlighting the club’s strength in depth.
He emphasized that this group of players could form three teams that would be competitive in many African leagues.
Managing such a large squad comes with its own set of challenges, but Broos commended Mokwena for successfully handling the difficult task for nearly three years.
“Despite the challenges of managing 35 players, I never heard of any significant unhappiness among the players,” Broos remarked.
“While it’s possible some players were dissatisfied, no issues with the coach’s relationships with his players were ever made public.”
The Major Disappointment: CAF Champions League Failure
While the results under Mokwena were generally positive, Broos singled out one significant area of failure: the absence of a CAF Champions League final appearance.
“His results were very good, but the biggest disappointment was that he never made it to the Champions League final,” Broos said.
This, despite the club’s remarkable success in domestic competitions.
Past Tensions Between Broos and Mokwena
It’s no secret that Broos and Mokwena haven’t always seen eye to eye.
During Mokwena’s time at Sundowns, there were instances where he voiced his frustrations regarding the readiness of players returning from national team duties, often citing concerns about injuries.
Additionally, Mokwena raised doubts about Broos’ training methods, showcasing the tensions that existed between the two coaches.
