What was supposed to be an ordinary ride on a light rail in Charlotte, North Carolina, turned into a nightmare when a young Ukrainian refugee lost her life in a sudden and senseless attack.
On August 22, 23-year-old Iryna Zarutska boarded the South End train with hopes of just going about her day.
She had come to the United States in 2022, fleeing the war back home, believing she was stepping into a safer, brighter future. Sadly, that dream was cut short.
A Random Act of Violence
Surveillance footage showed a man sitting behind Zarutska, watching her closely after she took her seat.
Moments later, he pulled a blade from his pocket and, without warning, stabbed her from behind while she was using her phone.
Passengers didn’t immediately realize what had happened, even as the attacker left a trail of blood in the train and ripped off his shirt before exiting.
Who Was the Attacker?
Police quickly identified the suspect as 35-year-old Decarlos Brown Jr., a homeless man with a long criminal history.
He was arrested shortly after the stabbing and charged with first-degree murder.
A judge later denied him bond, keeping him in custody.

From felony larceny as a teenager to armed robbery, domestic violence, disorderly conduct, and even bizarre incidents like misusing 911 to claim he was being controlled by “man-made materials,” his encounters with law enforcement were constant.
A Pattern of Trouble
Over the years, Brown had been in and out of prison.
He served five years for armed robbery and was released in 2020.
Not long after, he was arrested again for assaulting his sister, damaging property, and trespassing.
Police reports describe disturbing behavior, such as kicking in doors, yelling at residents, and creating public disturbances.
Despite the long list of offenses, many charges against him were dropped.
Family’s Heartbreak
For Zarutska’s loved ones, the news was devastating.
On their GoFundMe page, they described her as someone who came to America for safety and a fresh start, only to face an “irreparable loss.”
They are now left to cover unexpected expenses while mourning a life taken far too soon.
“She was hoping for a new beginning,” the family wrote, asking for support as they navigate this tragedy.
The Community’s Shock
The brutal killing has shaken Charlotte.
Councilman Edwin Peacock expressed concern that residents no longer feel safe on public transportation, especially along the South End and Uptown routes.
“The trust and confidence we have right now is very fragile,” he said, stressing the need for authorities to reassure both the grieving family and the wider community that safety will be restored.
What Comes Next?
Brown now faces the most serious charge of his criminal history, and the District Attorney’s office says violent offenders should remain behind bars as cases move forward.
For Zarutska’s family, justice can never replace what was lost.
