The 2025 SAG Awards may have celebrated the best in television and film, but the biggest conversation online had nothing to do with trophies.
Instead, fans were shocked by how drastically slim some actresses appeared on the red carpet, particularly their arms.
Social media quickly erupted with speculation, sparking debates about Hollywood’s obsession with extreme thinness.
Social Media Reacts to Dramatic Weight Loss
Photos of Demi Moore and other A-listers in glamorous gowns circulated widely, but many users couldn’t help but notice a common feature—alarmingly thin arms.
Comments ranged from concern to outright criticism.
“Arms are looking crazy, and the dress isn’t helping,” one user commented.
“There’s thin, and then there’s emaciated and gaunt,” another added.
Some even argued that such extreme weight loss should be addressed: “There needs to be some sort of preventative measure against malnourished celebrities flaunting their bodies like this on red carpets.”
The Rise of ‘Ozempic Arms’
Medical experts are now weighing in, linking this phenomenon to the rising use of weight loss medications like Ozempic and other GLP-1 agonists.
Dubbed ‘Ozempic arms,’ the term describes the gaunt, sagging skin that can appear after rapid weight loss, particularly around the joints where there is little muscle mass.
Professor Alexander Miras, an obesity specialist at Imperial College London, explained that this isn’t a direct side effect of the drug itself but rather a result of the drastic fat loss it induces.
“It’s similar to what we’ve seen before with ‘Ozempic face’ and ‘Ozempic butt.’
The rapid shedding of fat leaves the skin looking deflated,” he said.
Doctors Warn of Aging Skin and Muscle Loss
Dr. Julius Few, a plastic surgeon with clinics in Chicago and Beverly Hills, has noticed a concerning trend among his patients on GLP-1 drugs.
He describes the effect on the skin as resembling “an old, overused rubber band,” warning that the rapid weight loss can make the skin appear prematurely aged.
The issue goes beyond aesthetics.
Experts have long warned that losing weight too quickly can result in muscle depletion, making individuals more prone to health issues.
In some cases, it has led to severe consequences.
Celebrities Speak Out on Extreme Weight Loss
Singer Avery recently revealed that her use of Ozempic led to osteoporosis—a condition that weakens bones and increases the risk of fractures.
Similarly, TV personality Sharon Osbourne admitted to losing nearly half her body weight, saying she was left with sagging skin and a completely changed body shape.
Is There a Solution?
While some turn to plastic surgery for skin tightening, Professor Miras emphasizes that the best approach is strength training to rebuild lost muscle mass.
“The only real way to counteract the issue is through physical activity and weight training, especially targeting areas like the upper arms,” he advised.
He also cautioned that those with lower BMIs who take these medications purely for cosmetic reasons are putting themselves at risk.
“These drugs are not meant for people who just want to look better.
They are for individuals struggling with obesity and its health complications, such as diabetes and high blood pressure,” he said.
What’s Next for Hollywood?
With the growing use of weight loss drugs in the entertainment industry, the conversation around their effects—both aesthetic and health-related—is far from over.
As more celebrities experience extreme transformations, the debate over responsible use and the potential long-term consequences will likely continue.
Will Hollywood’s obsession with thinness ever change, or is this just another chapter in its ever-evolving beauty standards?
