HIGGINSON HIGHWAY SHOOTOUT
As previously reported, four people were fatally wounded in the shootout and a fifth suspect was taken to a hospital for medical treatment – he is being kept under police guard. A sixth suspect managed to escape and remains at large.
KZN SAPS spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Nqobile Gwala said the incident unfolded after security officials spotted a vehicle that was suspected of being involved in a number of robberies in Durban.
“The vehicle was spotted at the corner of Cowey and Clarens Road and the suspects sped off upon seeing the security personnel.
“A chase ensued towards the N2 off ramp, south bound towards the Higginson Highway. Police officers from K9 Unit, Airwing and other role players joined the chase,” said Gwala.
SUSPECTS CRASHED INTO TRUCK
According to the police, the suspects’ vehicle crashed into a truck on Higginson Highway and the shootout ensued. Three pistols were recovered from the suspects at the scene.
Gwala said the preliminary investigation at the scene revealed that the suspects’ vehicle was used in a number of robberies in Durban and Richards Bay.
“The recovered vehicle was hijacked in Pinetown during December 2021. Signal jamming devices were also found inside the suspect’s vehicle.”
The Chatsworth police are on the hunt for the remaining suspect and have opened an inquest docket and a case of murder, attempted murder, unlawful possession of firearms and possession of a stolen vehicle.
