Henke Pistorius Challenges State Prosecutor Gerrie Nel to Live TV Debate Over Son Oscar’s Murder Sentence in Pretoria

Henke Pistorius Challenges State Prosecutor Gerrie Nel to Live TV Debate Over Son Oscar’s Murder Sentence in Pretoria

More than a decade has passed since Reeva Steenkamp was tragically shot and killed by Oscar Pistorius, and while the athlete has since been released on parole, the emotional fallout clearly isn’t over—especially for his father, Henke Pistorius.

Now, Henke is reigniting public interest in the case with a bold challenge to the man who helped convict his son.

And he wants that showdown to happen live on television.

Henke Pistorius Calls Out Prosecutor in Fiery Interview

Speaking during a recent interview on Piers Morgan Uncensored, Henke Pistorius didn’t hold back.

He took direct aim at Gerrie Nel, the former state prosecutor in Oscar’s high-profile murder trial, accusing him and the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) of dishonesty and incompetence.

Henke claimed that Nel “misled the court” and unfairly targeted his son, who he still insists had no intent to kill Reeva Steenkamp.

“I want to have a live TV debate with Gerrie Nel,” Henke said, adding that he would only agree to it under courtroom-style rules.

“I ask the questions, and he can answer with yes or no. Let’s see if he’s brave enough to accept that.”

Still Insisting It Was Manslaughter, Not Murder

Henke continues to argue that Oscar’s actions on Valentine’s Day 2013 amounted to manslaughter, not murder.

According to him, Oscar genuinely believed there was an intruder in the house when he fired the fatal shots through the bathroom door at his Pretoria home.

Back in 2014, the court initially agreed, finding Oscar guilty of culpable homicide.

But that ruling was overturned the following year, and in 2015, the conviction was upgraded to murder.

Oscar was first sentenced to six years in prison, but after another appeal, the Supreme Court of Appeal extended that sentence to 13 years and five months in 2017.

Oscar Pistorius Now Living on Parole

In January 2024, Oscar Pistorius was released on parole after serving more than half of his sentence.

He will remain under strict conditions until his sentence formally ends in 2029.

Henke believes his son has paid enough for a mistake—not a murder—and says Oscar was unfairly targeted and “mauled” by Gerrie Nel, who earned the nickname “the Bulldog” for his relentless courtroom style.

“Oscar was just an athlete, and here he was, left exposed to a guy like that,” Henke said. “It wasn’t a fair fight.”

Where Is Gerrie Nel Now?

Gerrie Nel left the National Prosecuting Authority in 2017 and joined AfriForum’s private prosecution unit.

Despite stepping away from government service, he has remained busy with major cases.

He’s taken on several controversial prosecutions since then, including:

  • George Bizos’s son, Alexi, accused of assaulting his wife

  • UCT professor Pierre de Vos, allegedly involved in sharing child pornography

  • Jaco Swart, who made headlines for brutally assaulting his wife Nicoleen in 2028

He’s also representing victims in ongoing cases tied to:

  • Bergview College principal Jaco Pieterse in an alleged rape case

  • The family of late soccer star Senzo Meyiwa, who was shot in 2014

  • The widow of detective Charl Kinnear, assassinated in 2020

So far, Nel hasn’t responded to Henke’s challenge.

Whether he’ll take up the debate remains to be seen.

Should Gerrie Nel Face Off with Henke on Live TV?

Henke Pistorius is clearly passionate about defending his son’s legacy—and challenging the man he believes helped damage it. But will Gerrie Nel respond?

Let us know what you think: Should this face-off happen? Should Oscar’s story be reopened in the court of public opinion?
