If you’ve been driving around Cape Town lately and noticed how chaotic the roads have felt—well, you’re not imagining it.
The City’s Fire and Rescue Services just shared some alarming figures, and it turns out the past week has been nothing short of dangerous.
Over 230 Road Incidents in Just 10 Days
Between Friday, 27 June and Sunday, 6 July, emergency services logged a staggering 236 road accidents across Cape Town.
That includes 162 motor vehicle crashes and 74 pedestrian-related incidents.
The spike coincides with a stretch of particularly wet and slippery weather conditions.
Wet Weather and Risky Roads Don’t Mix
Officials are using this surge in accidents as a warning to both drivers and pedestrians: take extra care when it rains.
Roads become more dangerous, visibility drops, and reaction times slow down.
That’s a recipe for trouble if you’re not being mindful.
But here’s the kicker—those 236 incidents are only the ones that were officially recorded.
There could be many more that went unreported, especially smaller accidents where people went straight to a police station instead of calling emergency services.
A Call for Caution from the City
JP Smith, Cape Town’s Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, weighed in on the issue.
He stressed how even minor accidents can bring about emotional stress, financial strain, and massive traffic disruptions.
“Too often, we remind road users to adjust their driving for the conditions,” Smith said.
“Let this be another reminder: slow down when it’s wet—actually, slow down in general.”
