Thailand’s breathtaking scenery, exotic wildlife, and sweltering heat provided the perfect backdrop for the latest season of HBO’s “The White Lotus.”
But while the setting may be luxurious, the drama—both on and off-screen—was anything but smooth sailing.
Following the success of seasons set in Hawaii and Sicily, the highly anticipated third installment transports viewers to the tropical island of Koh Samui.
This time, the story unfolds at an opulent spa resort, where wealthy vacationers seek relaxation, enlightenment, and, inevitably, trouble.
With new faces, more episodes, and higher stakes, creator Mike White promises this season will be the most intense yet.
A Grueling Shoot in a Tropical Paradise
Filming in Thailand was no easy feat. Cast and crew spent six months working primarily at the Four Seasons Resort Koh Samui, which doubled as both their set and their real-life accommodations.
According to White, this season was the toughest to produce, not just because of the expanded cast and storyline but also due to extreme filming conditions.
“Thailand is an absolutely stunning place to shoot, but it came with its own set of challenges,” White admitted during a press conference.
“There were days I thought, ‘Maybe I just won’t make it through this.’”
Beyond the relentless heat, the team faced outbreaks of dengue fever, food poisoning, and encounters with Thailand’s infamous wildlife—including massive monitor lizards, venomous snakes, and tarantulas.
Tensions ran high among the cast, with some describing the experience as claustrophobic and emotionally draining, fueled in part by the hotel’s open-bar policy.
“Apocalypse Now” in a Five-Star Resort
Walton Goggins, who plays a wealthy but brooding tourist with a mysterious vendetta, compared the intense filming process to the chaos of “Apocalypse Now.”
“It was a reckoning—spiritually, emotionally, and physically,” he shared.
“Eighteen talented actors, all grappling with their own existential crises, trapped in a five-star resort—it was a wild experience.”
Meanwhile, actress Leslie Bibb, who portrays one of three lifelong friends attempting to reconnect, described the set as “hot-ass, haunting chaos.”
“The heat was intense, but so were the relationships,” Bibb explained.
“It’s sexy, complicated, and keeps you on edge the entire time.”
Monkeys, Mystery, and Mayhem
As always, the season kicks off with a diverse group of privileged guests arriving for a week of self-indulgence.
But, in true “White Lotus” fashion, we quickly learn that not everyone will make it out alive.
This time, the luxury retreat sits next to a Buddhist monastery, adding a layer of spiritual conflict.
White revealed that the season explores the contrast between guests seeking inner peace and their inability to escape their own primal urges.
“There’s this idea of people trying to be their best selves, striving for enlightenment,” White said. “But then there’s this unstoppable force that keeps pulling them back to their worst instincts—like monkeys in the trees, always lurking.”
Indeed, ominous shots of monkeys watching from the rainforest set the tone for another season of secrets, scandal, and social satire.
Star-Studded Cast and a Few Surprises
Returning to the series is Natasha Rothwell as Belinda, the spa manager from season one, now making a visit to her Thai counterpart.
This season also welcomes a high-profile new addition—Blackpink’s Lisa (Lalisa Manobal), who plays a “health mentor” at the resort.
For the global K-pop star, filming in Thailand was a rare opportunity to reconnect with her home country and family.
Other notable cast members include Michelle Monaghan from “Mission: Impossible” and Patrick Schwarzenegger, son of action legend Arnold Schwarzenegger.
The younger Schwarzenegger revealed that he has several nude scenes this season and confessed to feeling nervous about watching those moments with his famous family.
“They don’t know anything yet,” he admitted. “I’ll probably take a few well-timed bathroom breaks during those scenes.”
