Cancer patients across the Western Cape are set to benefit from a major boost in healthcare.
Groote Schuur Hospital has just unveiled its newly upgraded outpatient chemotherapy room and a fully modernized pharmacy, a project designed to bring comfort, dignity, and efficiency to thousands of people undergoing treatment.
Meeting the Needs of Thousands
Each year, around 3,000 new patients begin their cancer journey at Groote Schuur.
Until now, overcrowding and limited resources made the experience more stressful for both patients and staff.
The revamped unit promises to ease that strain—providing more space, better comfort, and a safer environment for preparing life-saving chemotherapy treatments.
A R5.2 Million Investment in Hope
This R5.2 million project wasn’t the work of one group alone.
It came to life through a combined effort involving government departments, civil society, the Groote Schuur Trust, and generous donors.
It’s proof of what can be achieved when resources are pooled for the greater good.
Leaders Praise the Collaboration
Western Cape’s Health and Wellness MEC, Mireille Wenger, described the project as a symbol of teamwork and compassion.
“This is more than just a room,” she said. “It’s a space of care, comfort, and hope that will serve thousands of patients for years to come.”
Hospital CEO Dr. Shaheem de Vries echoed that gratitude, thanking everyone who contributed.
“Their generosity ensures we can provide safe, dignified, high-quality care to those who need it most.
These contributions don’t just build facilities—they open doors of hope and possibility.”
Fully Operational and Ready to Serve
With the new chemotherapy unit and pharmacy now officially open, patients and staff alike are expected to see immediate improvements in their treatment experience.
For many families facing the uncertainty of cancer, the upgraded facilities represent something more powerful than medicine alone—a sense of comfort, hope, and dignity during the toughest of times.
