Government of Anambra State has inaugurated Awka City Stadium, another legacy project of Governor Willie Obiano-led administration.
Government House Correspondent, Ejike Abana reports that the FIFA-standard stadium, located at the heart of the city, would ensure that international tournaments would, henceforth, be hosted in Awka.
It is designed as a compact sporting facility with a covered stand, swanky dressing rooms, an electronic scoreboard, FIFA-standard pitch and Olympic-standard tartan tracks for sprinters and can accommodate future expansion possibilities while still retaining a large parking space.
Shortly after the official kick-off by the governor, the match between Community Secondary School Isuofia and Christ the King College, Amesi, saw Amesi leading in the first half by one goal to notting.
The second half ended with Christ the King College, Amesi scoring the second goal against Community Secondary School who scored non.
The second match was between Boys Secondary School, Aguata and St Joseph’s Memorial High School, Aguleri.
Aguata High School scored the first goal during the second half against Father Joseph’s Memorial High School, Aguleri that scored none
Governor Obiano who recalled the state walk for life, hosting of the police games, among others, assured that his administration will launch the Anambra Bombers and Anambra Babes football teams in February, 2022.
The Chairman of Anambra State Sports Development Commission, Mr. Tony Oli who was visibly elated that the project saw the light of the day, said that the state government has put measures in place to ensure continuous maintanance and sustenance of thd project.
Speaking to the ABS, Former National Chairman of the All Progressives Grabd Alliance, Senator Victor Umeh and the PDP flagbearer in the last governorship election, Mr. Valentine Ozigbo, commended the Governor for planning and executing the project which they pointed out will introduce a new phase of life into Anambra State Sports.
Government officials, Traditional rulers, among others were present to witness the event attended by the wife of the Governor, Dr Ebelechukwu Obiano and immediate family members, ex-rangers, Special Assistant to the governor on Awka Affairs, Comrade Obi-Ochije-Modilim, among others.
Four by one hundred meters mixed relay as well as presentation of medals, cheques and trophies to winners, featured at the event.
