Paris Saint-Germain’s goalkeeping department has suddenly turned into the center of a major football drama — and Gianluigi Donnarumma is right at the heart of it.
The Italian shot-stopper, once hailed as the hero of PSG’s Champions League triumph just a few months ago, now finds himself on the sidelines and edging towards an exit.
From Champions League Glory to Super Cup Snub
Just in May, Donnarumma was lifting the Champions League trophy after playing a key role in PSG’s historic win.
Fast-forward to August, and he’s been dropped from the squad for Wednesday night’s UEFA Super Cup clash against Tottenham in Udine.
Reports from France claim the 26-year-old has even been left out of training after being told that Lucas Chevalier — PSG’s £48 million signing from Lille — will take over as the club’s new No. 1.
Agent Slams PSG for ‘Zero Respect’
The goalkeeper’s agent, Enzo Raiola, hasn’t held back.
Speaking to Sky Sports, he accused PSG of showing “zero respect” to Donnarumma despite four years of service.
He also revealed that the French champions are demanding a hefty transfer fee for a player who only has one year left on his contract.
“We are shocked by PSG,” Raiola said. “They talk about respect, but it’s only about money.
We’ll consider legal options and see if Premier League clubs can meet their demands.”
Manager Takes the Blame for the Omission
PSG boss Luis Enrique, however, insists the decision to drop Donnarumma was entirely his own.
“Donnarumma is out of the squad because it’s my choice,” he told reporters.
“I want a different type of goalkeeper. Gigio is one of the best in the world, but this is the direction I’m taking.”
Premier League and European Giants on Alert
The Italian’s availability has sparked interest from several top clubs.
According to Fabrizio Romano, Manchester City are keen — especially as Galatasaray have been eyeing their current No. 1, Ederson. City have already signed James Trafford for £31m this summer and could make him first choice, but Donnarumma remains a tempting target.
Manchester United have been linked too, although they’re reportedly not actively pursuing him.
Meanwhile, Real Madrid and multiple Saudi Arabian clubs are also in the mix.
PSG’s Asking Price and Donnarumma’s Legacy
PSG are believed to be seeking around £40m for Donnarumma, a player they picked up for free from AC Milan in 2021.
During his time in Paris, he’s racked up 161 appearances, winning four Ligue 1 titles, two French Cups, three French Super Cups, and that elusive Champions League trophy.
A Champion on Both Club and International Stage
It’s not just at club level where Donnarumma has made his mark.
Back in 2021, he was Italy’s hero in the European Championship, playing a starring role in their victory.
Yet now, just a few years later, the man who once stood tall in the biggest moments could be packing his bags for a new challenge.
