Fans and reporters were left surprised at the Venice Film Festival when George Clooney was noticeably missing from the press conference for his latest film, Jay Kelly.
The 64-year-old actor was forced to pull out of the scheduled appearance on Thursday after battling what organizers described as a “serious sinus infection.”
Cutting Short His Press Duties
Clooney had already shortened his media commitments the previous day and even missed a dinner event with his fellow cast and crew.
His co-stars, including Eve Hewson, Laura Dern, Riley Keough, and Adam Sandler, all showed up for the event, while Clooney’s absence was officially confirmed by the moderator during the photocall.
Words of Support from His Castmates
The announcement drew a few lighthearted but sympathetic comments from his colleagues.
Sandler reminded everyone that “movie stars get sick too,” while Laura Dern added that Clooney was “devastated” about missing the event.
Hoping for a Red Carpet Appearance
Sources close to the actor revealed that Clooney started feeling unwell on Wednesday and was advised to rest ahead of Thursday night’s big premiere.
There’s still hope that he’ll be well enough to join his wife, Amal, on the red carpet for the evening screening of Jay Kelly.
The couple is currently staying at the Cipriani Hotel during the festival.

Just days earlier, Clooney seemed to be in great spirits.
He and Amal welcomed the film’s cast and friends to their lavish Lake Como villa.
Guests included Oscar-winner Laura Dern, director Greta Gerwig, comedy legend Adam Sandler, and actress Eve Hewson.
The Clooneys, along with their twins Ella and Alexander, even treated the group to a scenic boat ride before a private lunch at Villa d’Este.

Set for release on Netflix on December 5, Jay Kelly stars Clooney as a Hollywood actor famous for always playing himself on screen.
Directed by Noah Baumbach, the story follows the character during an Italian film festival in his honor.
