In the age of viral misinformation, it’s getting harder to separate fact from fiction—and this week, Patriotic Alliance leader Gayton McKenzie found himself at the centre of one such controversy.

A widely shared photo of McKenzie, deputy-president Kenny Kunene, and a third man sparked a flurry of social media speculation, with many mistakenly identifying the unknown man as Katiso Molefe—the businessman accused of orchestrating the 2022 murder of DJ Sumbody.

The Viral Photo That Sparked the Storm

The photo in question made its rounds online after Kunene was seen earlier this week at the Sandton home of Molefe—who has since been arrested by police.

Despite the link, both Kunene and McKenzie have pushed back hard against any claims of personal ties to Molefe.

McKenzie took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to address the situation directly.

Responding to the photo, he wrote:

“This guy in the picture is not Molefe, not you of all people, don’t fall for media nonsense.”

In a follow-up post, he clarified the man’s real identity:

“This guy in the picture is Dan Bhuga. You guys are desperate beyond.

I don’t know Molefe and never met him.”

Accusations Fly Over Misinformation

McKenzie didn’t stop there. In a third post, he pointed fingers at the Democratic Alliance (DA), claiming the party had a hand in spreading false narratives:

“The DA was delivering fake pictures of me with a murder suspect to every house, but our people know that we would not lie to them.

The WC is no longer a given for the DA, salute.”

His message? The Western Cape is no longer guaranteed ground for the DA, and voters are smarter than these tactics give them credit for.

Kenny Kunene Says He Was Simply in the Wrong Place

While McKenzie handled the public relations battle online, Kenny Kunene addressed the issue on TV.

Speaking to eNCA, he denied having any personal relationship with Molefe.

In fact, he claims he doesn’t even have the man’s phone number.

According to Kunene, he happened to be at Molefe’s home in Sandton by chance, having gone there while accompanying a journalist.

“I have never been there before, I have no relationship with Mr Molefe.

I don’t have his cell number. The police established that,” he explained.
“I was just in the wrong place at the wrong time—for the right reasons.”

Public Reaction Still Mixed

While both McKenzie and Kunene have made it clear they deny any connection to Molefe, public opinion is still divided.

The timing of the photo, the political rivalries, and the ongoing investigation into DJ Sumbody’s tragic murder continue to fuel debate.
