If you’ve got a child in Grade R this year and assumed they’d slide straight into Grade 1 next year without any fuss — think again.

The Gauteng Department of Education is shaking things up, and parents need to be prepared.

MEC Chiloane Says “You Must Apply Like Everyone Else”

Speaking during a media briefing at Jeppe Girls High School in Johannesburg, Education MEC Matome Chiloane had a clear message: being in Grade R doesn’t guarantee a spot in Grade 1.

“All parents and guardians must go through the proper application process,” he stressed.

The online admissions portal for the 2026 school year officially opens this Thursday and will close on 29 August.

“If your child is currently in Grade R, don’t assume they’re automatically sorted.

You need to apply, just like every other parent,” Chiloane warned.

How the Online Application Will Work

For the 2026 admissions cycle, the department is rolling out a five-step online system.

It’s designed to make the process smoother — but only if you follow the steps properly.

Chiloane emphasized how important it is for parents to upload all necessary documents.

If even one document is missing, your child’s application will be marked as incomplete.

Stay in the Loop with SMS Updates

To help parents stay on track, the system will send confirmation messages and alerts via SMS.

pop-ups will also remind users to finish any outstanding steps in the application.

Chiloane advised families not to change phone numbers during the process — that number is your direct line to updates, reminders, and verification alerts.

Also important: parents have seven days from the moment they begin the application to upload all their certified documents. Don’t miss that window.

Absolutely No Fees — Watch Out for Scammers

Chiloane also tackled an ugly issue: fraud.

He warned parents not to fall for any scams asking for money in exchange for placement.

“This process is 100% free,” he said. “If someone asks for money, report them immediately — either to us or at your nearest police station. Placement can’t be bought.”

Department Urges Vigilance and Support

Parents who run into issues or spot anything suspicious during the admissions period are urged to reach out to officials as soon as possible.

The department is encouraging open communication to help prevent delays or fraud.

Time to Get Ready for 2026

So, if your child is aiming for Grade 1 in 2026, don’t wait.

Make sure your documents are ready, your phone number is active, and you’re familiar with the five-step system.
