The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) has wished the Blue Eagle High School students who were injured in a truck accident a quick recovery.
On January 18th, a truck carrying bricks crashed into a classroom, injuring a number of students.
GDE spokesperson Steve Mabona said, “This is to confirm that today 18 January 2023, a truck loaded with bricks drove into a mobile classroom at Blue Eagle Secondary School in Cosmo City.”
Mabona said that, according to the available information, there were no significant injuries save for two students who were brought to the hospital.
According to contradictory reports, however, at least fifteen minors aged 14 to 18 were brought to the hospital by paramedics.
Nevertheless, Mabona said, “We wish them a speedy recovery and Psycho-Social support will be provided accordingly”.
A student who requested to be identified only as Nono described the event that left half of the class injured and the remaining students traumatised.
“A short while later, I observed that my teacher was on the ground and that some of my classmates were bleeding,” she recalled.
“We thank God that no one lost their lives in the tragedy,” she reflected.
The reason of the accident has being investigated by the police. Meanwhile, the Cosmo Chronicle stated that the local police detained the truck driver.
The vehicle is believed to have driven through the palisade fence and was stopped by the classroom wall.
