If you missed the initial round of school applications for Grade 1 and Grade 8 learners in Gauteng, now is your chance to apply! The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) is accepting late applications until Monday, 27 January 2025.
Late applications have been open since 11 December 2024, giving parents and guardians a final opportunity to secure placements for their children in the current academic year.
Who Can Apply for Late Placement?
Late applications are available to parents or guardians who either didn’t submit all required documents, like proof of home address, in their previous application, or for those who never submitted an application at all.
It’s essential to keep in mind that only schools with available spaces will be listed as options.
The GDE has also clarified that placement at the chosen school is automatic and final once selected.
How to Apply Online
The GDE has made the application process straightforward through their online portal. Here’s how you can apply:
Step 1: Register Your Details Start by registering your details on the system. After registration, you’ll receive an SMS containing a username and password to log in.
Step 2: Log in and Enter Learner’s Details Once you log in, you’ll need to enter your child’s details, including their home address.
Step 3: Select a School Choose the school you want to apply to. After making your selection, you should receive a confirmation SMS to let you know your application has been processed.
Step 4: Upload Required Documents In the final step, make sure to upload certified digital copies of the required documents within seven days of submitting your application.
What Documents Do You Need?
The following documents need to be uploaded as certified digital copies:
- Parent ID/Passport/Refugee Permit/Asylum Seeker Permit/Permanent Residence Permit/Study Permit
- Child’s South African Birth Certificate
- Proof of home address
- Latest school report (for Grade R or Grade 7)

Once all documents are uploaded and the process is completed, you’ll need to wait for further communication from the GDE.
