As speculation grows about Trent Alexander-Arnold’s possible move to Real Madrid, former Manchester United defender Gary Neville has cast doubt on whether the Liverpool right-back would secure a starting position at the Spanish club.
Despite reports indicating that Real Madrid is confident about signing him this summer, Neville believes that the competition within the team could pose a significant challenge for the Englishman.
Real Madrid’s Stacked Right-Back Options
Speaking on the Stick to Football podcast, Neville pointed out that Real Madrid already has strong options at right-back, including Federico Valverde and Dani Carvajal.
He argued that Alexander-Arnold has long faced criticism for his defensive shortcomings and suggested that this could become an issue in Madrid.
“I’ve always said he needs to take defending more seriously, or it will create problems for him,” Neville stated.
“At Madrid, he’ll be up against Valverde, who is doing an incredible job at right-back, and Carvajal, who, despite his injuries and age, still offers a balanced approach going forward and defensively.”
Tough Competition Awaits Alexander-Arnold
Neville further emphasized that Carvajal, at his peak, was a more complete full-back than Alexander-Arnold, highlighting the Spaniard’s ability to contribute both in attack and defense.
He also pointed out that Alexander-Arnold’s history of being substituted frequently in key matches, as well as his struggle to secure a consistent spot in the England squad, could indicate underlying issues with his defensive game.
“It’s rare to see a right-back get subbed as often as Trent does in crucial moments,” Neville remarked.
Fan Backlash Over Transfer Rumors
The buzz surrounding Alexander-Arnold’s potential departure has sparked emotional reactions from Liverpool supporters.
One viral video on social media even showed a fan burning a jersey with his name on it, signaling strong feelings about the possible transfer.
Neville acknowledged the mixed emotions among Liverpool fans but also compared the situation to David Beckham’s career, pointing out how moving abroad shaped his journey.
“As a fan, I understand why they feel this way—he’s a local boy,” Neville said.
“But from a career perspective, playing for Real Madrid is an incredible experience. Beckham wouldn’t have had the career he did if he stayed at United his whole life.”
What’s Next for Alexander-Arnold?
With his Liverpool contract set to expire this summer, Alexander-Arnold faces a pivotal career decision.
If the move to Real Madrid materializes, he will have to prove himself against top-tier competition and adapt to the demands of Spanish football.
While some question his fit at the club, others see this as an opportunity for him to elevate his game on one of football’s biggest stages.
