Gary Lineker signs multimillion-pound Netflix deal for football podcast as Jamie Carragher delivers playful criticism on air in Milan

The world of football media never seems short of banter, and Jamie Carragher recently added his own cheeky commentary to the mix.

The former Liverpool star took a light-hearted dig at Gary Lineker’s podcast, The Rest Is Football, after news broke of the former Match of the Day host landing a blockbuster Netflix deal.

Carragher, known for his quick wit, didn’t hold back, joking about the podcast’s popularity despite its multimillion-pound contract with the streaming giant.

Lineker Lands Eye-Watering Netflix Deal

Back in November, the Daily Mail reported that Lineker had signed what was described as an “extraordinarily lucrative” deal with Netflix.

The arrangement will see him host his football podcast on the platform during the next summer’s World Cup, teaming up with football legends Alan Shearer and Micah Richards.

Reports suggest Lineker’s production company, Goalhanger, could earn a staggering £14 million from the partnership, equating to over £2 million per week.

To put that into perspective, it far surpasses the £1.35 million per year he earned presenting Match of the Day, which made him the BBC’s highest-paid presenter.

Behind the Scenes of the Podcast

Lineker and his co-hosts are set to record from a New York studio, with segments featuring insights from inside the England camp and fan zones.

The deal even made its way into CBS’ Champions League coverage, where Richards joined Carragher, Thierry Henry, and host Kate Abdo for commentary.

During a live broadcast from Milan, CBS reporter Anita Jones jokingly asked Richards if he could spare some of his Netflix payday to buy her something from the city’s shops.

“I am hoping, Micah, you are going to send me some of that Netflix money,” she quipped.

Carragher’s Famous One-Liner

Carragher, ever ready with a witty remark, turned to Richards and said:

“What is this?”

Richards responded, “Just the number one pod in the UK.”

Carragher fired back, laughing:

“Oh, that’s what it is. The Netflix deal for the podcast that no-one listens to. Honestly, I don’t know anyone that listens to it.”

The comment drew laughter from Richards and highlighted the friendly rivalry between football media personalities.

Carragher’s Rival Podcast Gains Momentum

Interestingly, Carragher isn’t just critiquing podcasts from the sidelines.

He’s a regular on the popular rival show Stick to Football, a weekly YouTube podcast featuring Gary Neville, Roy Keane, Ian Wright, and Jill Scott.

The podcast is produced by Neville’s company, The Overlap, which recently made headlines itself. Radio powerhouse Global—owners of stations like Classic FM, Capital, LBC, and Heart—acquired a majority stake in the company from previous investors Miroma Group.

Neville Eyes Global Growth for The Overlap

Following the deal, Neville emphasized that the aim is to turn The Overlap into a “world-leading football and sports media platform.”

He reflected on the journey so far:

“The Overlap started as an idea that we thought people might like, and we went for it. What has happened since then has been a great journey.

It’s a team I love working with, and I’m incredibly proud to be part of it. We never thought of it as a business; we just wanted to create something people loved and would return to every week.”

Neville added that the partnership with Global will help scale the platform and establish The Overlap Network, aiming to become a global leader in football and sports media.
